Default Florida registration / Smog

I would like to know from you Floridians what the registration deal is in Florida. Do you guys have an inspection you have to go thru or just register your car and your good to go.

My brother may be moving there from Texas and is wondering if he should wait to get a shark and get one in FLA.

No inspections, just need insurance and pay the registration and tag fee. That's it.

If you have an ROW car [Euro], you may have to spend some time in the office. They might have to call Tallahassee, since Florida's computer won't recognize your WP0ZZZ vin number.

Be patient- my car is an '85 Euro and it is registered in Florida. My VIN is WP0ZZZ92ZFS841526. If they tell you that your car can't be registered, tell them to look up mine and ask why yours won't work.

Hey Normy,

What if the car was registered in Fla before? I bought the car from Tampa. My brother picked it up and took it to DFW where he lives and registered it in TX as it is under his name now. He might be moving to Fla as luck would have it. Would there be any problem with re-registering it there?

Also, My brother reminded me of an "impact" tax or something like that for out of state vehicles. Is that still in affect? also, would he (I) have to pay that even if the car was registered in fla before?

Joe- the fact that it was registered in Florida before should probably make it easier to register. I've just heard that some people have had problems at the tag office when they showed up with a ZZZ car. Mine has always been registered in Florida, so its never a problem.

The vehicle impact fee was discontinued about 10 years ago. A basic tag is about $28/ year, and a custom tag like mine runs about $60. As stated above, there is no form of inspection at all in Florida, though they will check your car's VIN plate when you go to title it here.

Best of luck!

The problem that I had with my ZZZ car was not with the State of Florida, but with the insurance companies. It took some convincing before my insurance company would insure the car due to the ZZZ Vin. In the end, they asked me to fax them the EPA paperwork as well as a digital photo of the DOT sticker on the car.

Good luck!

I brought this up some time ago but I have a new question so why not continue the old thread. Again for you folks in Fla. Let say you have a regular US car out of state. Will you have to actually bring the car to the dmv office for them to check it or can you just run the paperwork through.

If you're trying to register a car from out of state, they will want to verify the VIN on the car. I think you can have a police officer or a notary of the public verify it if you don't want to bring the car to the DMV.

Florida will give you a form that you can take to a law enforcement official to fill out. Basically, all the cop is doing is certifying that the VIN is correct. Take this to the tag and title office and they'll sell you a plate.

Looks like another car in my name.

Also, does Fla. still have the out of state tax? I mean when you bring your car from out of state & reg. it, do you pay a big *** tax?

TIA

Ron, it was a hypathetical question. I have no intention of registering my car under your name in a place that has no smog law.

If you paid sales tax in another state and own the car for 6 months or more there is no additional sales tax due in Fl.

No smog or emission tests either. Law was repealed a few yrs back.

You have to love the state of Florida for letting the people make the laws!!
