Recovering old 928 S4 by newbie
Hello guys and please don’t judge just help, please. I’m new to Porsche 928 but have time, hands and working head. I found this forum and read a lot of useful information but need some advices from pros.
I bought 928 S4 automatic in a rough shape. The car was in Florida the whole life so some items are melted, like radiator fans shroud and plastic panels.
First I did is checked if the engine is spinning. Removed spark plugs, added some lube and let it sit for few hours. Than rotated the engine with the crank shaft bolt. Rotated nice and smooth.
Second I removed and checked Fuel pump which was dead (removed), next will need to clean fuel tank and check fuel level sender.
Third I went down and check the car for TBF. Loosen the front flex plate bolt, moved flywheel all the way to the back and with fancy tool measured the free play which appeared to be 0,0085”
Re torque the rear and front bolts to 66 ft*lbs.
with the starting fluid sprayed to intake (filter removed) did start the car and it filled my garage with old exhaust fumes but nothing like smoke or something.
so what I need help with:
car has no fluids (no coolant in the tank and I don’t think in the rad as well), oil is higher than max. I did drain the oil a bit to check if the coolant is in the oil pan but had oil coming out of the drain plug.
So I think I need to change almost everything on the car like timing, coolant and seals. Rack and pinion might be leaking (will be rebuilding it).
SO while changing timing belt WHAT can I change while I’m in? Timing belt, water pump, belt tensioner what else? Where can I find like a list or something?
I have more questions but I think let’s start with that first.

Welcome to the tank. You are on the right track with what you've done. There are lots of WYAITS, but the timing belt, water pump, rollers, rebuild the tensioner, and replace the fuel lines. These are the critical things. Clean the MAF carefully - that thin platinum wire can break easily. Replace the fuel filter in the rear of the car, under the tank (I think).
Here's a treasure trove of info and detailed instructions on what you need to know - especially Dwayne's links:

Good luck and keep us posted.

Good on you for reading and doing stuff you read about like the crank end-play check. Your end-play is just out-of-spec but 50% below the limit.
For the timing belt, you need this:

Next, when I saw your picture, my first thought was "(small) Engine Fire."
You gotta lot of work to do.
Download my inspection guide (URL is in my signature block). It will do two things for you (at least):
1) provide you with lots of pictures of how stuff should look.
2) provide you with lots of tests to do both visual and with tools and a multi-meter.
Before you attempt to start it again, given my above "fire" comment, I suggest that you remove the air box and then bypass the fuel pump relay (search for how-to), operate the fuel pump and check all four engine bay fuel lines for leaks.

Have you given up on your quest already. It seems that it is listed on Ebay now. https://www.ebay.com/itm/324155983894

wanted to know what the car worth right now and I will sell if it will sell.
I will be doing work on the car and IF I will be able to keep it I will. If my budget will allow me to finish it up would be great.
