Rebuild console side covers?
I took the console side covers (among other things) off last night to start correcting the wiring mistakes that POs made (aftermarket gadgets installed by poorly-trained chimps).
1989 928GT.
The console side covers are some sort of fiberboard covered on one side with carpet. The fiberboard tends to break. I'm thinking about cutting some other material in the same shape and transplanting the carpet.
Ideas?
Aluminum?
Some plastic?

I had mine off this past weekend. (installing boost and AFM gauges) They are simple affairs with only 2 screw holes to deal with. There is a certain amount of flexibility to them, so what ever material you use you want to match that characteristic. I bet you can get some fiber board at the local lumber store that closely matches the thickness and consistency of these pieces.
Take at look at 928 Motorsports, theirs are made of polvinyl. Havent seen or used them so purchase is up to you...:

Are your 928 Center console kick panels ratty, broken, or just plain dirty? Are the screw holes pulled thru and torn? Upgrade them to our semi-gloss black plastic kick panels and enjoy a better looking, more durable solution than you had before! We use cast-black extruded polyvinyl to make our kick panels, they are scratch, fire, and corrosion resistant. Screws will not pull through them, and they will stay shiny and sharp looking for years. Black only. Identical dimensions to stock - this is a 10 minute swap that will really enhance your interior. Sold in pairs, driver's and passenger's side.

I just purchased a set of replacement side console covers from 928 Motorsports. They are made of black polyvinyl and were $49 for the pair (that includes shipping). They are a little under an eighth of an inch thick.
You can either leave them black (they look fine) or cover them with some carpeting for the stock look. They seem much sturdier than the old versions.

I had the same problem with broken boards and got the idea for using a something similar to the 928 motorsport. A trip to home depot
& bought a huge black plastic sheet and some jig saw blades. Then using the old broken board as a templete cut new ones. They didn't look all that great, so I covered them with leather, looks much better then before.

I've got 2 good ones. You just need to re-cover. They are covered with blue carpet. If you want them I'll pay for shipping. $25 takes them. Just want more room in the addick. Let me know.

Thanks, Chuck, but I think I'm going to reengineer the ones I have. In 2004 we should be able to do better, as far as materials, than fiberboard.
Riding in a friend's 90 GT today, I noticed that the console side covers are different -- more contoured; not planar.
