Smile Wheels D90 or Club Sport M393?

After years of delays I'm finally motivated to start making some headway in restoring (mostly body and interior work is needed) my running 1980 928S Euro 5sp. I'm currently putting together my list of what needs to be done and in what order to tackle the projects and while I work on that I do know I want to swap out the original flat disk 16" wheels for something else and I have a couple of questions regarding what I'm thinking of going with. I'm pretty confident from what I've seen out there so far that I want to go with either the 16" D90 or the 16" club sport M393.
  1. Can anyone tell me if one or both style wheels will work on my car without any type of modification needing to be made or negative effect on handling? If I do need to make modifications what does that involve (spacers, etc)? I don't really have any idea how to figure out fit for wheels
  2. If anyone has the D90 or CS M393 wheels on their early model 928 would you share images so that I can compare the look? I basing my wheels choice(s) on a 928 I saw a few years back that had either the D90 or CSM393 wheels. I thought they looked a lot better then the flat disk wheels and since I don't know which wheels were on the particular 928 I saw pictures would help a lot.
As I prepare to take additional steps in getting the car into shape I'm sure I'll have lots of more questions for the group but the wheels seemed to be the easiest starting point to make tackling all this feel less overwhelming.
Thanks!

I'm no expert but I think you will find they are all ET65 offset so shold fit - others to chime in here. D90s come up occasionally at affordable prices. Club Sports not so much at least here in the UK. I think some have had their slots machined to look like D90 too. Have a look at the back of later slots for a clue. Personally I still like slots but I know what you mean with the D90s and CSs

D90 wheels came on 1990 and 1991 928 S4 and GT. 7.5” front and 9” rear

D90 Cast wheel

91 GT

1989 GT came with Club Sport “forged” wheels much rarer, as only about 200 89 GTs came to the States.

CS 8” front and 9” rear. Usually use 21mm spacer on rear.

D90s are ET65 f / 52 r
CSs are ET60 f & r hence need/desire for rear spacer.

IMHO D-90's look best and belong on what they came on....928 GT's. Cup 1"s look great on the 80-86 cars. Here's my first...also an 80 Euro S...

One option to think of - original flat dish wheels are 16x7 ET 65 on all four corners.
Since 8" and 9" Club Sport wheels are difficult to find and expensive when you do, look around and find four 944 Turbo Club Sport wheels (not hard to find) - they are 16x7 ET 65 - the same size and offset as the original 928 flat dish wheel.

You could run them on all four corners and have the exact tire/wheel size that were original to the car while having genuine Club Sport wheels, just is a smaller size than on the '89 GT, but still the original size/offset that came with the car.

I have a set of these off a 89 944 S2. The don't look meaty enough on a 928.

When buying it's good to know D90's were also used in 944 S2 and 964. Some 964 fronts were even 6" wide,

And only really suitable for rear-heavy a$$ draggers. You want as much front tire on a 928 as you can stick in the front fender wells.

I have a sets of both 928 D90 wheels and 928 GT club sport wheels. I also happen to be local to you but unfortunately neither set has tires mounted or I'd offer for you to "try them on".
I would be happy to talk with you about purchasing one of the sets once you've made your decision.

At the Porsche museum.
You can have the same look with a set of CS Design from a 944 Turbo S, and 17 mm spacers from a 944 Turbo at the rear.

The 7" CS wheel from the 951 has a different face profile than the 8" CS wheel from the 928. The overall visual character is very different. The 7" wheel reads thin and the face detached or separate from the whole of the wheel (think hubcap) and thereby visually conveys less strength. They look weak to me for those reasons on the 951 and (I would imagine) would exhibit the same character on the 928.

I agree but a real 928 CS set of rims belongs to a CS, SE or 1989 GT. It would be a pity to use it on anything else.

Hard to decide which I like the look of better. The D90's on the car look great and the CS's which are hard to judge with no tires on them and not on the car also look great.
