Bad Alternator - need a better understanding
According to O'Reilly's my alternator is bad. The only thing they could tell me is it was something to do with the B+ post.
What does that mean?

Brushes look worn, but not to the point where there should be issues. While it is still out, take to another place to test, with someone who knows the equipment better. The modern alt test machine should give a print out with results.

buy a new Bosch voltage regulator,
and after inspecting the slip rings and they look good,
put the new part in and see if the alternator works

Feh! I bought remanufactured unit. It'll be here in the morning. I'll toss this one on the research pile.

As a precaution clean up all connections from the alternator to the battery, including earths. Wally P has written an excellent yearly planned maintenance procedure for the electrics. If you follow this procedure you cannot go wrong.

What do you have to remove to replace the voltage regulator?
I want to fit a replacement as a precautionary measure, but I'll wait if I have to remove the alternator itself
Thanks

If you remove the Alt belt and the oil filter you can remove the rear alt duct housing then 2 screws hold the regulator in
Note I suggest that you only use Bosch components or you may have todo the job again

After the regulator the other things attached to B+ are the rectifier diodes that convert AC from the stator coils to DC . If the B+ supply was fully shorted out when the car was running the diodes can be destroyed - they will usually end up open circuit (though they may initially fail short circuit) and the alternator will not generate.
