Default car starts with csv disconnected - csv stuck open?

Hi, just spending some lockdown time ruling out issues causing my rich running. I know fuel pressure testing is needed but I can’t access anyone to do this right now.

I have used the test lamp procedure to confirm I do get 12v to the CSV when cranking - but not when starter is disengaged and engine running, which sounds correct.

However even with the 12v connector to the CSV removed, the car starts right up from cold, and then after a few seconds starts to really richen up and drop big black soot drops out of the exhaust.

I can’t get the car to run with CSV removed from intake and running into a clear pipe - this would be the way to confirm it is delivering fuel all the time but the car wont run at all like this - even with a little fuel squirted into the CSV port on the intake..

What do you think folks? thanks in advance

Put the gauges on the system to see how its doing,
a leaking CSV will show pressure loss after shut off as well as a leaking check valve in the pump or the O ring in the pressure screw at the FD.

You could try to turn the mixture screw 1/16 CCW this will lean out the mixture,
put some techron into the gas and do short runs

Thanks. Mixture adjustment screw seems to make no difference - even with bigger adjustments up to 1/8-1/4 lean or rich..I think I am doing it correctly- I have the filter housing off so I can see, and I am pushing down to turn the screw.

Just pondering this - I really need to get it to run with the valve out so I can eyeball whether or not the valve is constantly running. From what I can tell it should start from cold (on a mild spring day) without the CSV - it might just take more cranking. Mine is no where near starting without it.

I am thinking maybe car was adjusted to run with this rich condition, so without the CSV injector, it is way too lean to run - so maybe I need to richen it at the mixture screw and try again.

I wonder if the constantly running CSV is why when it is in place, mixture adjustments make no difference, as the CSV is swamping the system.

Any thoughts on these theories?
