Default Center console shift base plate

Hello, I have an 88 928 auto. I'm putting the center console back into car the after some dash repairs and noticed under the center console shift base plate these two metal "L" pieces that don't seem to connect to anything. When I move the shifter back and forth the 2 "L" pieces don't move. Am I missing something?

Those are latches that lock the shift plate in place when installed. They need to be unlatched to remove the plate. Your picture shows them nearly latched closed. The open position would be with the "L" square with the plate - rotated clockwise 30 degrees from where they are now.
