Default Single stage paint?

83 ROW, BLACK L700
This appears to be single stage, but does anyone know for sure?

Don't know *for sure* but all non-metallic 928s were originally single stage definitely through '93 and as far as I know through '95.

Quick check..take some compound or polish on an applicator and rub the paint. If black comes off on applicator it’s single stage.

Is this about *your* 928? Or 928s in general?

Mine. I was about 99% certain it was single stage, but I will always defer to the knowledge from some on this site.
Need to do a little touch up, but some places suggest I needed clear coat, which I questioned.

Knowledge of single stage paint is dying out. I've had the same conversation over the years with 'experts' that were adamant that original paint on a '90 or '93 (etc.) had to be water-based. When I pointed out that color rubbed-off during polishing they were then adamant that it must have been repainted with single-stage (as if...)

That said, I have seen 928s with partial resprays of two-stage such that part of the car was single and other bits clear-coated.

Here's the 1st page of a longer document I put together showing all the factory paint codes and their composition.

1983 L700 was U1 (solid color, single stage), from 1978-1985.

And here are all the blacks, from 78-93. I _assume_ what was available in '93 was available through '95, but I don't know for sure.

Interesting. You're showing black as of MY'93 as two-stage.

I know that for the early '93s, at least red was single-stage.

All the '94s and '95s I've worked on have been metallics, so no data.

Should we assume that early '93s should be treated as '92s for purposes of the chart and that non-metallic late '93s are two-stage?

When I repainted the 89’ GT I did it in the correct Indisch Rot single stage.

this ^^^^^

I found that the rear passenger quarter panel on my GT had been repainted and done with clear coat. Noticed it as I was doing the first compound/polish after I got it and when I did that quarter panel....no red came off.

Love the 928 folks. Learn something new every time I visit. Never knew there were 4 different Black shades.

Anyone have pictures of what the 708 [Black Metallic] and 738 [Black Pearl] look like vs the 700 [Black] ?

Mines got the 700.
