A good car day defined:
In a rare collision of polar extremes, today, I got a ride in the Benz Smart Car and got an in-depth private tour of the Maybach by a friend who works at the dealership. From the cheapest Benz to the most expensive Benz and back into my Land Cruiser in less than an hour!
The spartan Smart Car is destined to capture the attention of small business owners who want to smear vinyl letter advertising all over the car. But I have to say that the little 3 cylinder diesel packs a punch. However, I don't think it would stand a chance in a run-in with my wife's Sequoia.
The Maybach is simply beyond words. I'm not sure how many maple trees were felled for each car, or how many cows gave up their leather coats, but the car smacks of luxury at every seam and I loved it. I needed sunglasses to protect my eyes from the glare of the beaming burlwood and chrome inside. As luxurious as it is, I can't help but ask if this is a car one would drive or be driven in. And if you did either, would you really consume beverages from the ice cooler that's between the rear seats? From any distance, this car is decidely un-Benz and more Bentley.
All of this brings me back to the 928: a delicate balance of luxury made uneasy by a heavy dose of performance that'll let you slide the back end out without any complaints from ESP or VSC counter-acting systems and prompting the kids in the back seat to threaten to tell my wife how I drive....I can't wait till the snow clears.
