Default 86’ S(2) fender question

My 86’ ROW S(2), 310hp twin dizzy, has this round “cavity” on the drivers (left) side fender. It is not on the passenger side. It looks completely original.

Any ideas?

No ideas, but my 1986 S2 (RHD) doesn't have that feature.

It think it's standard on all of the S4 cars, perhaps in the ROW market that started at the beginning of '86? In any S4 it's covered by the body cladding.

Cavity on my '89:

Yes. I’m aware that it is on the S4 and up cars. But under the plastic.

This is an 86’ ROW, and the cavity is exposed. And its clearly meant to be this way because it has the original textured paint on it.

First i thought it was a converted S4 fender, but there are no welds on it.

Just a mystery to me. I have not seen it on any other pre-S4.
