Default Which radios are right for I490 code

Hi All

Like many cars, my original radio was long gone when I bought my 85 Euro S2 (which seems to be built originally to 86.5 spec). Build sticker shows I490 but I think this just means 8 speakers? I would like to find a correct radio (preferably one with long wave so I can listen to the cricket) but my searches return mixed results. Brian Long's 928 book source suggests Blaupunkt Koln, Atlanta, Hamburg or Boston are correct for the 85MY, but I am unsure what the various model codes mean.

UK Ebay shows the following available;
  • Atlanta as SQR-49
  • Hamburg SQR-48 & 23 - what's the difference?
  • Koln SQR 22 & 23 - what's the difference?
  • Boston SQM-27
Do I vaguely recall that one of the model codes stands for the model year?
Anyone point me at a definitive list by model year??

Happy spannering

David

I can't say for sure what your specific car came with from the factory. However most '85 cars that I see have the Monterey SQR 23.

With the VIN of your car, I should be able to provide the radio equipment, if there was one

FWIW of the 23 1985 928s that have sold on BaT, 8 of them had period Blaupunkt radios installed. 5 were Monterey SQR 23, 2 were Reno SQR 46, and 1 had a Reno 2.

If your car is a UK delivered 1985 S2, here are the radio fitted, at the factory.

I327: Radio Köln
=> Two cars, WP0ZZZ92ZFS841010 (without I490) and WP0ZZZ92ZFS841050 ( with I490)
I330: Radio Blaupunkt Toronto SQR 46
=> Five cars, none with I490, WP0ZZZ92ZFS840064, WP0ZZZ92ZFS841154, WP0ZZZ92ZFS841278, WP0ZZZ92ZFS841360 and WP0ZZZ92ZFS842092

If your car is not 1050, it was delivered without radio. AFN had a list of radios that could be installed at the delivery of the car, but any period correct radio would fit.

You would get a much better reception when listening to the cricket by installing a good modern bluetooth radio and a smartphone with the bbc sounds app installed.
Moreover, you would be able to listen to any of 6 or 7000 stations around the world.

Thanks Samuel. My VIN is WPOZZZ92ZGS840480 so later than this group. It was registered 29Nov85, which confuses me as Brian Long's book suggests it an 86MY. It has the square jacking points on the rear btw

Thanks Murray, this is interesting. I am rather old school in my thinking but do despair of the limited choice from analogue stations on any long drive. I think this may be a good option for my daily which is totally dull to drive!

So, it is an early 1986 MY.
I will check if it was delivered with a radio.

When your car was registered has very little to do with its Model Year. In general, Porsche model years run from aug/sept to aug next year. So, a car produced Oct. 1985 is a 1986 model year.
The same car, produced in Oct. 1985 can be registered first time in June 1987. The car is still a 1986 model year.

WP0ZZZ92ZGS840480 was delivered without radio, but with the I490 equipment, so 8 speakers and amplifier.

For the 1986 MY, UK delivered cars with I490 were delivered mainly with Blaupunkt Toronto SQR 46 (M330), 175 cars.
Only 3 cars were fitted with M328, Blaupunkt Bremen or Symphony.

I would try to find a Toronto, if I were you, but there is a modern version of the Bremen that is interesting.

Absolutely. The Bremen 46SQR DAB is well worth a look. I bought 2.

For future reference here is a good site that describes how to decode Porsche VIN numbers.

https://www.stuttcars.com/technical/vin-decoder/

Of course the best 928 VIN resources are Samuel and Rob.
