Hi All,
just bought a battery tender. Guide says hook up the positive to positive and the negative to a ground. I’ve read risk of spark is low bc this is low ampage but should I use the ground to be safe? If so, is the metal clip built into frame of trunk (top of picture below)
an acceptable ground ?
You can use the jump post and an engine ground but best bet is to get a cable with a one-way plug on one end and ring terminals to screw onto the battery terminals on the other. (Make sure it's fused properly)
The danger of explosion when charging doesn’t apply to a trickle charger.
I also did a permanent hookup at the jump post with a polarized connector. Just raise the hood and plug in.
I connected leads (eyelet ends, fused) direct to the battery clamps and ran 2 wires out to the rear bumper, and mounted a socket under the licence plate as below. I have an isolator in the ground lead, so with the charger wired this way I can leave the trickle running even when I have isolated the battery from the car to work on something. Dont have to open anything to make connection, just have to remember to disconnect it before moving. Attachment 1335948
Plug looks like this - more positive connection of the positive than a std cigar lighter thing. I think its called a 'Merit' plug. Attachment 1344096
