At the beginning of November on the same day I had a new clutch friction plate fitted by Paul of 928Spares.co.uk my car died on my way back home near London. It was two weeks before I found out what had happened – my cam belt had failed stripping it’s teeth causing valve-piston contact. Martin D spent a wet Sunday afternoon with me and diagnosed the problem. Because this is a 32v car I had assumed it was a lost cause, but Martin encouraged me to attempt to repair the engine. Later he then spent another wet afternoon helping me start to strip down the engine.
Nick of 928Spares.com sold me a pair of replacement heads for the “project” for a very good price. A 928 buddy called Peter took me to the 928UK December meet and brought the heads back for me (a 200 mile round trip). Jon928se repeatedly lent me tools and also spent a couple of wet afternoons helping with my repair, he was also my emergency helpline when anything went wrong. My dad made various tools for me and also spent a wet afternoon helping install the new heads.
John Speake, Adrian928se and various other 928UK listers have also all helped with advice and invaluable CD Roms. 928 International, Dick Lovett Porsche and Bert at Berlyn have supplied the parts.
The result is that my engine ran on Sunday for the first time in nearly four months. The amount of noise and smoke it made completely petrified me though. However the smoke was because I’d squirted 10cc of oil in to each of the bores to make sure they were well lubricated. All but one of the scary noises died away as the car warmed up and there were no obvious oil or water leaks. I stripped the front of the engine off again to find that I’d fitted one of the bolts on the tensioner the wrong way round and it was fouling the harmonic balancer causing the loud tapping noise. I’m confident that once I refill the car with coolant tomorrow all will be fine (although my road worthiness certificate has now run out!) The whole repair has been made all the more awkward by the fact that I have no workshop and have had to work in the open rather than a garage, and the car has been parked half a mile from where I live without access to electricity. However I know that without the encouragement and advice from you guys on Rennlist I might have given up long ago.
Thanks everyone!

Super job!! I'm certain there's been a large community anticipating your successful restart. Again, well done - a new chapter for the books, or 'Up Fixen Der Porsche' on an outdoods overhaul.
BTW, I know it's London and all, but wasn't there one afternoon without rain?

I admire your persistance and tenacity. The old girl will reward you. Now say to yourself.
1) Get cheap tension tool, retention the TB after 1,000 miles,
2) check it once a year or every 5,000 miles, no matter what anyone EVER tells you.
