Is this an automatic, or a manual? The manuals have the clutch in the area, the automatics the flex plate. There is a cover over the flex plate housting that could have become lose. Or the heat shield above the cat. Or the ceramic filling of the cat. Or... lots of possibilities.

Whirring ffor a while..... Then the shuddering vibrations show up at about 3k RPM.
Thinking about it makes me shudder (pun intended).

Nicole,
It's an auto. The sound is more like a loose piece of metal rattleing around in the exaust before the cats. It comes and goes when cold ,then constant all rpms. I'm pulling of the pans this morning to investigate. Every time I work on one thing ,another issue seems to present itself. Must be the circle of life.....Sorry I was watching the Lion King w/ my 2 Y/O this morning. ; )
Last week I had an exaust leak which turned out to be the sniffer tube rusting in two, so I plugged that, Maybe there is some connection there.

Thanks for all your help

UPDATE........
The rattling was coming from......you guessed it , the plug I put in the sniffer compression fitting. I used a 1/4" taper bolt and some solder as a gasket..DOH... I presume the solder had a low melt point as it is part of the cat by now and without that the bolt was rattleing in the fitting. Fixed with a new bolt in the fitting. I will replace the sniffer tube when I get some new compression fittings.
Thanks for your help.

Tim
