Hello my name is Maxwell I am new to being a Porsche owner I bought my second Porsche a 1979 Porsche 928 gts ,2 months ago and I need a little help understanding this transmission . So I was shifting into 3rd gear and it slipped and would not let me put it in gear . Fortunately the location of the third gear seemed to shift a little to the left towards first gear . I got it home and it was driving fine no issues and then I went to take it out to see how it was doing the next morning started great started to drive fine . I went to down shift into 3rd from 4th ans it wouldn’t go into gear just felt like a rattle can at my feet in the clutch . I tried to go through the gears and none would initiate except reverse . I reversed to a parking to to wait for a tow truck . I also drive jet around the parking lot it goes into gear as of now . Any ideas what this intermediate shifting problem is ? Would be great!

 

My guess is front shift ball cup is in need of replacement. I would also recommend the rear shift bushings be replaced

"1979 Porsche 928 gts" if it's 1979 then it's not a gts, that came along a lot later. Has it been converted in some way, other than the body kit?

 

This one has been posted before. The yellow, huge wing & Corvette scoop are kinda hard to forget. I couldn't find it with a quick search, maybe someone with better skills than I can.

IIRC, just a body modification. Could be 'misremembering' on that.

OP, I'd take a good look at the shifter linkage. Ball cup up front, bushings in the 'u-joint' at the back.
The fact that the shifter seems out of place is a good indication of the issue.
The 'rattle can at your feet' is a bit odd, so there may be more issues.
