Default Instruments & pod out - have I though of everything?

Car is a U.S. spec 1986 5.0-litre, 32-valver with the 4-speed auto. I have the interior largely removed from the car to address several cosmetic issues. The dash and instrument pod are out at this time.

The Drive light in the PRND32 display has been out since I bought the car nearly years ago. So I assume that there is no better time to take car of that issue.

Is there anything else to consider while the pod is out of the car on a while-you're-in-there basis? I replaced the 19 warning light bulbs and 3 illumination bulbs a couple of nights ago, and eraser-cleaned the contacts on the big blue ribbon. I'm a little anxious about the PRND32 light replacement as it requires disassembly beyond what I want to get into, and my soldering skills are about 40 years in the past.

A Porsche tech who is a good friend has mentioned that the odometer gears are likely on borrowed time - so perhaps now is the time to tackle that as well.

What else should I be thinking about, before it all goes back in?

Give the clear plastic cover a good clean inside and out, mine had 30 years of fine dust on the inside that looked much better afterwards.

The surround for your instruments is not gray from the factory. Those spots are little tiny mold organisms. It would be a good time to clean that up and maybe paint it afterward.

If the odo gear is original, replace it. Your friend is correct.

There's an excellent writeup on Dwayne's site (link in the "New Visitor" sticky).

Also.. the lack of the prnd32 lights could be due to a bad circuit board on the back I looked at mine closely with a magnifying glass and saw a fracture and what looked like a little charring. I mad a jumper wire across this section and it has worked ever since. I had exhausted all other ideas causing it prior to that.

Second the ODO gear. Mine is an 87 and it went year ago. I think Dwayne has a nice write up for that . http://dwaynesgarage.norcal928.org/1...0Procedure.htm

Upgrade the cluster lighting to LEDs. Big improvement.

Check the voltmeter reading for accuracy - apparently it can be adjusted closer to true. Mine reads ~ 1.2V low.

Just pulled the pod on my 82 to replace the odometer gear and check the warning bulbs and charging resistor. Subscribed!

+1 on the plastic polish and LED conversion. Maybe lose that "Unleaded Fuel Only"?

A little bump on this post... does anyone have any experience/recommendations for a dash cover supplied by Collectors Auto Supply out of Reno, NV? Looks to be a plastic veneer-type of kit that requires finishing of the cracks etc in the existing dash.

TIA
