I hate these damn things. They're awkward and the carpeting makes them twice as inconvenient to work with. Mine are soft and beat up, so I like the plexi idea, but I think I'll cover them with vinyl.
I made my replacements out plexiglas, then used spray adhesive to attach new carpet. It's thin enough where it will properly seat into the upper panel grooves of the console, and another benefit is when you need to access wiring in there you only have to take the front screws loose and the panel is very flexible to bend rearward to get to what you need without having to remove that screw obscured by the seats.
