Looking at my sig line will indicate to you how I voted. Spoilers are $250 to $300 and it is tough to find one with out some damage. Both of mine do and when I have the chance I'll replace them for cosmetic reasons, since they still function ok & pass the ten foot test. I am probably wrong but depending on the color of red it might not have clearcoat. My Guards Red one doesn't anyway.

I like the venetian blue with cream colour interior - any pics of the interior?
What is the interior colour of the red and white cars?
I'd go after the '90 myself - depending on interior colour.

The 1990 has the highest book value , has PSD limited slip and Air Bags which can be a good thing . Since you plan on spending money for wheels and tires it may be best to have the higher value just in case someone hits you totals the car and you have to sell it to the insurance company . It is very hard to get much from an insurance company for an older 928 no matter how much you have spent repairing and improving it .

Couple of things...
First..If you want a 5-sp..then get a 5 speed..don't settle for any less......the 86.5 is a very capable performer and with the 5 speed..a lot of fun....
The S4s have more power...period....the 87 will feel like a slug next to the 86.5 5-sp...but that is feeling...drive the 87 AT..and manually shift...and it will come alive....or should I say ALIVE!..!
Now the usual mantra is..buy the latest version you can get.....in this case ..the 1990....with a 2.54 rear..and the latest interior ...digital dash etc....nice car..good price...and driven hard and manually shifting the AT...I bet that car would be a blast...
So....my vote is the 90...but like I said..if you want a 5sd..then get one..otherwise...the one you buy now..will shortly be sold for a 5sp....either that..or that perfect 5sp will come along....just as soon as you finalize your deal...
Good luck...
later,
Tom

Gretch I had one customer invest $25,000 restoring his early 928 .....5 liter engine late interior great paint job .....with in less than 1,000 miles his son knocked the front 1 1/2 feet off the car . After much discussion he convinced his insurance company that he should get $7,000 ......... also I know that even today many people still borrow money to buy a 928 and the value is even more important to them . ( I will not go into the advisability of that) . I also get many phones calls from people with a 78-86 928 who want to make their car "look like a newer one" I have never ever had someone with a later car ask " how can I make my 90 look like a 84 .......... SO given the three cars (IF the 5 speed trans is not important to him ) I would think the 1990 would be the best choice I personally would not want to dye an interior.

Well upon talking to the 1990 seller, I won't be buying that car...phrases like "well the AC is cold most of the time but every now and then it isn't" and "you know I buy these things at auction and they rarely come with a service history, I wouldn't be able to tell you if the timing belt is replaced but it probably doesn't need one"
The seller is a dealer in a somewhat rural part of Alabama. I tried to bottom out his price but he never called me back once we dropped below 11K.
It's down to the venetian blue and the red and black car. I am leaning towards the venetian blue because I think it is more unique than the red/black and I personally like the s4 body style.
As for questions about why not take my time. I am just not personally into looking for months on end to find the perfect 928 when the venetian with its 15 years of documented service history and low mileage say that it's the one. I am sure 11.5K is paying a premium for an 87 928 but I don't intend on selling it anytime soon and given that my parents bought a 928 brand new and lost that much value in a year, I'm not too concerned.
I may or may not change then line interior color. If I strike an agreement on the venetian blue then I'll forward the phone number of the 86 Red seller.
Thanks, everyone!

I had a 5-Speed before, and am very happy with my automatic and a Jager Engineering Tip Shifter. This combo gets me the best of both worlds - without worrying about shifter cups, clutches, synchros, long shifter travel, and left foot strain in heavy traffic.
Even though I admint the GT was clearly the fastest car I've ever owned, the difference to the manually shifted S4 is insignificant in all but competitive situations. And those are not my part of my driving anyway...
Based on my past experience, I'd buy the best cared for car I could find. The newer, the better, but without good care, no buy. $15k in 4 years (15k miles driven) speak volumes... (The car is now almost completely refurbished and better than ever).
I also don't subscribe to the theory of "low mileage cars are bad". Yes, they develop problems when they are not driven. But at the same time they don't get rock chips, dash cracks and scuffs or cracks in the leather. Replacing mechanical parts does not alter the car - repainting and reupholstering makes a high mileage car look new, but it is still worn in many more ways than the low mileage one. And for the cost of a good paint job and interior redo, you can have the best mechanic in town do a lot of repairs. $15k, for example...

When it comes to finding "your" 928 you will often have to make some compromises along the way. I love my Black/Black GT......but after having about 5 black cars including another 928.......I really wanted a red/black
car or blue/tan, etc. But after looking a little over a year, this perfect 22k mile '90 Black on Black GT showed up at a good price and was more then I could pass up........now it's mine........
The venetian/cream combo is a pretty stunning combo......and pictures will not do it justice.......like many 928 color combos, you have to see them in person to get the full effect......
BTW........$11.5 is a GREAT deal for the blue car if it is in the shape you speak of. Often these cars will sell in the $13k-$15k range.

I also vote for the blue 87....I also don't like the cream/light grey interior....the black or tan looks much better, but it sounds like the overall condition of the car is much better. The 86 5 speed might be more fun....but I just think the S4 and newer cars look much better....my advice...go drive them both & buy the one that puts the bigger smile on your face!
