Default OB air pump bearing

I am in the process of pulling the engine on my 1979.

one of the first things I. Noticed was that the bearing on the air pump is shot. I have disconnected the pump itself, but still need it in place to balance the load on the crank snout.

Are these things rebuildable, or do they have to be replaced?

They're rebuildable. I just send it off to a proper rebuilding shop to have the work done. The bearings inside are a common size but their specs escape me....

You can run without it for a while, it won't do any real short term damage.

There are six bearings, one B-188, one 6203, and four J-65's. About $50 just for the bearings. But the complete R&R is a fiddly process, and it's hard to get it reassembled without getting the front and rear bearings in the right plane axially after pressing on the pulley mounting plate. Get it wrong and the thing makes a lovely scraping noise. My batting average on being successful is only about 50%. A rebuilt from 928Intl is a sure thing for $259:

The more threads I read about this, the more Im tempted to leave it off. My AC clutch froze long ago, so there is not a belt on it.

The car is moving to The Olympic Peninsula in Wa, where there are no emission tests, so I dont really need either the smog pump or AC. Do I really need to worry about uneven loading on the crank if both ate deleted?

Scott,
My opinion is that removing the smog pump is fine. Others have different opinions. See this thread:

I will reiterate my reference to a Greg Brown quote in post #34: "If the air pump belt load has any affect on the main bearings, you've got other problems."

Get the “air pump bypass” belt from Roger and take it off.
If you’re worried about “crank bearing loading”, consider that this belt will help offset the downward thrust of your connecting rods.
