How do you R&R the early (pre-S4) taillight housings?

The mounting on one of my taillights is broken away. I don't see a way to get at it. Thanks for any help.

Correct. You need to remove the bumper. When doing so you will probably break off some of yhe M6 threaded studs. I welded new SS bolts on the mount strips. No big deal.

once you have the rear PU removed it will be easy to put some new screws into the lamp housing this will secure the broken mounts.
use silicone where the screw goes into the lamp,
so the lamp stays dry

Unless you are restoring a concourse car, I'd pull it into place from the outside, clamp and JB weld overnight. Tape off the bulb sockets and respray your silver while you're at it. Taking off the bumper cover and returning it to its previous installation is a serious task. Just my 2 cents.

Most of the time, when I see them, a broken stud incident has already occurred and supporting hardware is missing. The stud itself doesn't break, but the part of the housing that secures the studs is broken. If I have all 4 studs for each housing, then it is a very easy fix. Usually there is enough of the housing left that the stud can be fixed back into its correct position well enough to 'Fusor' for a permanent correction. Scuff the housing up good with a course grit and just puddle the plastic repair glue on the housing where the stud is exposed.
Fusor T19 is the glue that I prefer. This repair explanation doesn't require tapping into the interior of the light housing BTW.
