Question is this because of rotten head gasket ?

I just took off the head from left side of engine just to change the gasket while the engine was out and i saw a kind of deposit between the valves. On the pic you can see that the gasket is rotten (red arrows).
Is the deposit caused by the rotten head gasket ? coolant probably went there.
The engine did'nt turn since last fall.
Thank's in advance for help

the stuff in the combustion chamber is probably due to humidity in the engine just from sitting. If it happenend while running the chamber would be real clean. The rotting head gasket is probably due to improper coolant and or age.

The dark areas on the metal ring of the gasket normally indicates a leak. The marked areas are probably deteriorated due to leaking combustion gases. Make sure you have the head checked for warpage and resurfaced before reinstallation.

Same thing happend on my S4 motor, blistered gasket and corroasion underneath. It goes into be welded up and skimmed soon. All those little pieces are probbaly clogged up in your radiator.

About , 2 1/2 tears ago, I believe it was John Speaks or another of our British sHARk brethren, a post that later developed into a nasty pictoral showed severe corrosion on the head/block deck that migrated into the piston bores. Decking/milling was out of the question...
The poster did an engine swap as it was the only cure.
You are believe it or not...LUCKY to catch this early enough.
On the up side, that damage took over 23 years to develope.

AM,
That's not clear for me, are you only changing the left head gaskets?
Anyway better to change all the gaskets - All of them are rotten

ERIK QUOTE :That's not clear for me, are you only changing the left head gaskets?
i'm changing all the gaskets , i did'nt ask for the right side because the p.o. has already changed it in the past and it looks OK.
I had a problem last night that could have become a disaster, a fuel hose has fallen lower than the fuel tank and leaked on the floor and in the pit just under the car, Lucky again , the heating system did'nt start risking an explosion. As soon as it is possible to work in there again i will check under the gasket for the condition of the head. believe me it won't happen again, that's what i call experience and we can't buy that.
Thank's to you guys again !

If it looks OK you must have the head off to see, if the head is off you have to replace it.

Hey,
If it was my engine I would not 'jump the fence' by not changing also the right head gaskets - The work to do this is peanuts compared to the work you are already doing - Also not forget to change the valve steam gaskets and lap the valve when you are there
Afterwards you will be happy you did - And remember Mr. Murphy is after us 928 owners

Hey Guys i'm silly enough to have had the fuel leak badluck but not enough to do only one side of the gasket

Forgive me , english is not my first language and sometimes i'm not clear.
I undid the right side first and saw that it was OK and it has already been changed by the p.o. then i did the left side and saw the suspect deposit and rotten gasket ,but i planned to changed all the gaskets.

Erik , could you elaborate on :
''Also not forget to change the valve steam gaskets and lap the valse when you are there''
But please remember not be too hard on the language
Thank's
Tony : by the way I LOVE YOUR AVATAR

Am,
1. Ok I misunderstood you
2. When you are there, lap (grind) the valve and change the oil seals on the valve steams (Placed under the valve springs) - This will reduce your oil consumptions
