ok....I'm not proud. Here's the story. I didn't want to work on it in the garage because it was a beautiful day. I am in an area that's more or less in the woods, with hills. I pulled under some trees, chocked the front wheels, and proceeded to replace the boots on one of the rear half shafts. When I finished, I pulled the jack stands, lowered it, and kicked one of the chocks out from in front of one of the front tires. I went about my business and my "helper" was in the car and I asked him to put it in park. Well, I don't think he heard me. A while later I kicked the chock from in front of the other tire and notice that it moved...and was moving faster and faster. The slope was enough such that even though I jumped in front of it, the flip flops that I was wearing didn't stay on my feet more than a flash and the car was picking up speed. My feet were grinding over the top of dirt and rocks and the car kept picking up speed. I knew I had to bail out. I dove out of the way and rolled over and watched it continue picking up speed. Until it hit a tree.

The end.

Sorry to hear, but the experience you have had is called, I believe, an "ignosecond."

It's like locking your doors as you get out of the car and as you latch the last locked door seeing that your keys are on the seat/console: An ignosecond!

That darn gravity!

On the tire.... did the car ever sit on that tire flat or way under-inflated? 8" of damage matches up pretty well with a contact patch that isn't supported by air in the tire.

I bought it with those tires already on the car, and they appeared to be in great condition. Almost new. I've only had to add air one time...a coupe tires were down a few lbs. I've put maybe 3k miles on them.
I need to ready up on the specs for alignment. I suspect that the vibration is tire related, but I've never done anything but eyeball the alignment. I've never measure to see if the car is out of square, but I've never seen any indication of damage. The body gaps all align perfectly, except the hatch seems to want to torque just a tiny bit to the drivers side (maybe 1/8") and it wants to hit first on the left side when it closes.
