Due to my lack of budget to replace the seals in my torque converter, I have to refill my transmission +/- every two weeks. This means that there are probably 4 different makes of ATF in there already.
Today is BP Dexron II's turn (previously normal ATF, not Dexron), which brought the question to my mind: Can I mix ATF fluids?

Dexron III *(or II) is a grade of ATF vs. a brand. The current flavour specified for the auto is Dexron III, regardless of the brand name on the container (BP/Shell/Esso/Texaco...) GM was the orriginator of the grade name - I think
Mixing brands of the same grade/specification is OK.
*the III and II are compatable, the former being a spec upgrade

Hello Edwill,
If you are not mixing types of ATF, type "F" with type Dexron, for instants, and you have checked your owner's manual that your Dexron II is good to use with your car's auto tranny, the Dexron types of ATF, are generation types, like our shark's S2's, S3's, S4's, GT's, GTS's. The higher the Dexron # is, the "better" it's supposed to be.
That is how I understand it, anyways......

Sure, you can put an ol' gunk in there. I had a rusty winter beater V6 FWD Olds Cutlass that bled tranny fluid like a stuck pig. It sat for the latter part of one summer in the driveway, leaking itself dry into a drip pan, until I picked up the drip pan, strained it's contents into an old oil bottle (to remove most of the bugs) and dumped it back into the tranny. Ran fine.
Note that I would not recommend this for Stuggart's finest....
