From what I've read about the polyester topcoat, and looking at those pictures from Madera, I'm convinced that I need to let the pros handle the fix. That's great looking work.

I refinished the wood trim on my '94 GTS (that was re-sold this week on BAT). The finish is VERY hard to remove. I used citrus strip paint remover, and it took many treatments. I used something like 400 grit W/D sandpaper between treatments. My wood was originally light burlwood. I stained it with a water based cherry stain to get the color I wanted. Then about 6-8 coats of Spar polyurethane with 1K to 2.5K W/D sanding between coats. Came out looking great. Here's the BAT listing which has several pix of the wood trim: .

Gary Knox: I followed that sale on BaT. That's a beautiful car and the finish and color of the wood trim is fantastic. That engine bay's not too shabby either. I have access to, and experience working with, some pretty nasty solvents so I remain tempted to attempt this on my own. I'm not in a huge rush and I always figure that time and patience help to achieve a lot of these kinds of goals.

Something to consider- the wood "patinas" under the coating. Be extra careful not to scrape it off in spots when removing the finish when using stripper

Default Poly

Don't try that without experience. We do poly on Grand pianos. It's a skill set it a backyard hobby

This is as far as I got. Then I talked to Jeff at Madera, he calmly talked me off the ledge (in a way that suggested that he'd had the conversation many times before....). He'd never done 928 wood before but the result above speaks for itself.
