I've owned my 1981 928 37Kmi car for several years now, and its always had what sounds like the starter motor bearing going out. I have no reason to think its not the factory installed starter motor. Once the engine starts and the starter motor solenoid disengages, the sound goes away. Other than an audible nuisance, everything seems to work fine.

Is the starter motor bearing a known issue with these cars? I know I could just replace the starter, bit see no need as long as it still works.
