My car stinks
my car is starting to stink! ('89 S4 Auto)
the exhaust gasses smell very rich and average urban fuel consumption is up. The tickover when first started is also slightly higher than it was a while ago (900 rmp) and smells very rich indeed. these symptoms seem to have gradually crept in and gotton worse over the last couple of months. The car seems to run fine, beautifully in fact, tickover when warm is 600rpm and even. the exhast gasses are clear, no discolouration even under hard acceleration, it just stinks. as this is my first winter of owning the car it may just be normal under cold winter starting conditions, in fact this is what i thought a couple of months ago when it was proper cold (proper cold by Leeds UK standards not Portland US standards) but now that spring is here and the morning temperature is back above Zero i'm starting to smell a rat, a high octane rat.
I'm thinking/hoping MAFF as it's now done 80,000 mls and the comprehensive history that came with the car doesn't disclose any past work/replacement in this area.
kind regards to you all

Rats come in various forms and disguises! You will be more fortunate if this one materializes as an O2 sensor vs. a MAF.
An erroneous sensor signal drives the ECU rich, the CAT creates the smell.
(now you can tell me, as I've committed an opinion, that your car has neither CAT nor O2 sensor! )
Actually, there are several possibilities: The Temp II sensor can also create a rich condition. - and there are others.....
With a DVM, either of these two sensors can be easily checked, and may be a reasonable place to start.

my rear struts have just arrived from 'Bert Gear' so i'm gonna fit those this afternoon and then i'll check your other points.
.................................... it's starting to look like the MAF though isn't it................................ be honest, i can take it like a man.................

My 928 stunk like gas for a while once also but it was only a simple replacement of a broken plastic "Y" hose connector under one of the front fenders that led gases off to somewhere. Replaced the cheap plastic Y and no more gas smell. Hope you're as lucky.

Harvey: Seems a common culprit, but it would not explain worse fuel economy or high idle.
Give John Speake a call and have him check your MAF, it's a cheap test (esp. since you're both in GB). http://www.jdsporsche.com
