Default alternator bad i think? Help?

I just went to start my 84 and the lights were dim and the amp meter on the dash was in teh red and all the warning lights were light up. Does anyone have any suggentstions on checking what is wrong wether it be the alternator , battery, or voltage regulator. Previously witht eh stereo and amp, and lights on when i'm idling the amp meter goes into the red. but after about 2000 rom's it goes back up. Was this my alternator slowly dying. Any help owuld be appreciated

Thanks

Something like this I would take the alternator somewhere to be checked. If your alt checked out okay then I would look to a ground.
