What does "928" signify?
#46
So once 999 is used, where do they go from there on the numbering scheme... since it's already up to 997?
Hmmmm... me wonders what # the Panamera will be assigned?
Rob
87 S4

928 stands for project 928;
The Zeppelin airship company used to assign project names, but on these aircraft several were used, to denote particular design areas. DLZ 129 was the registration mark of the Hindenburg- this means Deutche Luft Zeppelin 129, or "German Air Zeppelin 129"
Volkswagen used "type names" on their cars. The original beetle was, of course, the Type 1. Later came the type 3 and type 4- or 411, which shared its engine with the 914. Then came the VW type 17, which many Americans have parked in their driveway: VW Rabbit (Golf I)
Type 19: Jetta
Type 53: Scirocco
Type 50: Corrado
Project names sometimes are the final product!

Hi Heinrich,
Don't know, first 3.5 years I only did routine maintenance ( maybe I did it wrong) now starting 6th year of ownership. In 5 years did about 30K miles.
Current problem is the gear change (manual) in 1,2 & 3 is very crunchy. I bought a GT box in ebay, will fit it in jan or feb.

If that happens every year you have a lemon, however if this is the first time you've replaced those items, then I say 26 years is pretty darn good .... why did it all happen simultaneously? Usually there's a reason.

Don't forget the 929 is also a slow overweight Mazda. What a crime making a 9 series POS like that one. It's not like Porsche used the name rustang, uh, mustang or anything. Well I guess there is a reson for that...

Thanks,

The project numbers were (and are still) allocated to every Porsche project from the Luge, Airbus cockpit design, Wind turbine generators and the Opel Minivan as examples.
These project numbers may also become the model type number (but not always) do mean something to the engineering staff at Weissach. They are not allocated sequentially either.
However their is nothing any Porsche owner can use to directly attribute these numbers to the car in any black and white way.
The example given for the 928 looks logical, but carried through to its conclusion does not make sense. The 930 was certainly not the third generation of anything and the 996 was not the ninth cause the 993 was?
Hang on the 980 was the eighth, but what about the 989? Just kidding.
There are also part number code series such a 955 which do not always reflect the project number or type number either of the actual vehicle they are fitted to either.
Ciao,
Adrian.
