Default "28 year" maintenance update for the GT

For the last couple years I have had an intermittent issue with the TPS. Last year, it was causing my Check Engine light to come on after restarts. It was also 6 years since the last TB, WP Tensioner service so I contacted Dave Chamberland (worf928) to get the GT into his capable hands for it's 28 year maintenance service.

Also since I will be headed down to Rendezvous 928 in Atlanta at the end of June (2400 mile round trip), I wanted to make sure all is well with the GT. All fuel hoses, coolant hoses and PS hoses were original, all replaced. Intake sensors, TPS, knock sensors, ISV, CPS, and air hoses original also, all replaced. New rotors, caps, spark plugs. Injectors sent out , cleaned and balanced. The right cam gear showed wear, the left was good. Right gear was replaced. Laso pump, gates belt and PK tensioner replaced. MAF and LH were rebuilt two years ago. O2 sensor changed out last year when shifter coupling replaced. The intake and cam covers were still looking good as were most all plated hardware, so decision was to leave original as it's only "original once" !

All back together yesterday and fired right up, no leaks (fuel or coolant) and sounded great. Dave asked if I had ever had the fuel pumps checked, and the external pump and filter were changed 2 years ago, but not the internal pump. Dave dug in and found the internal pump hose ripped...tested to see if pump was still operational...yes, so made the hose repair. Dave will get to flush/change brake, clutch and PSD fluids and good to go for the next 28 years. Should make the trip to Atlanta uneventful and FUN!

The level of knowledge and attention to detail that Dave applies to his work is really amazing and I'm lucky to be only a half hour drive from his place.

28 years of dirt in valley, no oil or coolant

all plating original

Looking good

Excellent. I found the same situation with my internal pump as well. Replaced with GB's hose and should be GTG for a long time.

Great job guys.

Need to look at that internal pump someday on mine...

Have a good trip at the PCNA rendez-vous.

Recommend getting to it before a piece of rubber fouls up your external pump. Apparently, those are getting expensive as well.

I had not noticed any issues with the fuel system, but this was probably a ticking time bomb, waiting for me to be as far from home as possible before it let go! If the pump does not get ruined, then it is a reasonably easy fix with GB fuel pump hose and clamps.

Does Roger sell that hose (and clip)?

Thanks.

Sweet!

I am so far from a 928 mechanic it forces me to be pretty self reliant. While I can do all of this maintenance, I'd prefer to pay someone else that does these things all the time...

Fortunately Bob knows and appreciates how good he has it!

Betrand, I don’t know, I believe Dave got the hose and clamps from Gregg Brown. Check with Roger.

+928 for Dave and his meticulous work. But keep it quiet, or we'll have to schedule the next 28-year service now to get in the queue.

My in-tank pump was totally shot so on Dave's advice it was deleted. Best $1000 I never spent.

That V mess is pretty paltry compared to what I found when I took the intake off. Among other fun stuff, in the oily guck I found several cooked acorns and a quarter
.

Bob,

That seems like a lot of wear on that gear for a 47,000 mile engine. Dave C, Do cam timing gears often wear at such different rates?

It surprised Dave and me. I had a PK tensioner installed when I got the GT in 2012 at 24k miles. We noticed that the previous shop in 2012 left the o ring on the lever bolt and that bolt was loose. I emailed Ken (porken) and he said that if the lever was hung up or loose, belt might have been loose and damaged the cam gear. No one is sure why. I put 23k miles on that belt and pk tensioner. The left side was fine? Make sure to remove o ring on lever bolt for pk system, it’s there to just hold bolt in shipping!
