Default what replacement for flimsy spare wheel cover

Hi there,
On our 1985 s3 there has still got the Original cover plate for the spare wheel. This makes getting to the battery a nerve wrecking job.

What do you guys have as a replacement? Plywood? Plastic?

I certainly wish someone would make a reproduction of the originals for early cars. How hard could it be? Looks like resin & wood fibers.

Ben, If yours isn't to far gone you can try sanding it, coat with some penetrating epoxy, then glue on some new closed cell foam found: http://www.classic9leathershop.com/carpet-for-porsche/ if to far gone try 928 Intl for a good used one. T
