The 1991 Airbag system was changed to a main controller (944 618 217 02) which had a separate wiring loom.

The 1990 Airbag system was notoriously weak, with Airbag faults pretty common. I personally repaired a few cars where these 1990 systems have "gone off" and exploded one of the airbags randomly...not a good thing. The 1991 system has proven to be very reliable and mostly trouble free. The 1990 system was not available as a replacement part and superceeded to the 1991 system, of which I have purchased several systems to repair 1990 model cars, over the years. The superceeded pieces had a retail price of ~$6000.00, from Porsche, many years ago.

If I personally owned a 1990 car with the early airbag system still inside, I would change it or disable it.
Greg,

You nailed it! Thank you for your excellent summation!

The main reason my 90 GT became an outlaw was: The passenger airbag went off while I was driving the car without any provocation!

I was driving home from droomans shop and I called him because the airbag light came on erratically. We decided that I would bring the car to him the next day. After ending the call BOOM! the passenger side bag went off and shattered the dashboard and windshield. I was in heavy Florida traffic and after the shock of the explosion the cabin was filled with acrid smoke! Windows down immediately, multiple expletives and the bizarre realization of what had happened!

After a bit of thought regarding the fact that my insurance company would either not pay for a mechanical issue of this nature and that the car would also likely be totaled or branded, I decided to just keep driving the car home...

The rest is history and I am really happy that I decided to go the lightweight route with this particular car. It is a blast to drive!

The Carbon Fiber dashboard turned out to be fantastically beautiful and is unique.

And now, I do not have to worry about those damn 1990 airbags!

Regards,

Dave

The only thing I do not like about the Carbon Fiber dash is the occasional glare off of its gloss surface...

Thanks again Greg for providing excellence in 928 maintenance and support!

Like some others I have both so an make a direct comparo; both cars are Grand Tourers where the S4 does feel somewhat sportier, a little lighter and agile.

The GTS is more plush, luxurious and eats miles and miles and miles for breakfast. I drove my car to OCIC Wichita, KA in 2012, 6000 km round trip, never missed a beat. I believe we had a beer together at the event Joe which I hope we repeat sometime soon.

I'm sure it had nothing to do with his tri-state killing spree a few years back.

Kidding, love ya Joe!

Randy, that's pretty funny!!

Canada, isn't alone, there are more than a few countries that won't let us visit, even one at a time. I'm considered a person of interest by the U.S. Government. I used to have a passport, but the Government won't issue a new passport, cuz I refuse to cooperate in an investigation. They can't accept the fact that I don't know anything, and if I did, I wouldn't tell them.
Actually I believe there's nothing stopping me from leaving, I just won't be allowed to return. Unless I bow down and give them what they want. Or something like that. If it was just an individual that I was dealing with I could eliminate the problem. My problem is the system, I can't get due process. Believe me I've tried everything, the courts just ignore me and never respond. It's always back to square one.

About as real as it gets Dave! In the Hells Angels World, we're at the top. Nomad status is earned by honor, loyalty, and deed. We're recognized as a separate entity within the club. Been a member a very long time.

There are a lot of people on this forum that have been around me more than once. Other than being an Angel, I'm just like everyone else here, no better, no worse. Some of and I'll say more than any other group, the best people I've ever met own this silly car! I'm blessed to have it and know some of y'all.

I'm just a little different, that's all.

must have been early on the evening Joe, I would have switched up to Scotch or Rye if we were gonna get serious

Daphne and I like 3rd Coast so much we bought Jims S4 which we leave with our good friend in DFW area for caretaking, absolutely we are there.......in some respects cant wait.

take care buddy, be rockin' with ya soon enough.

To get back to your original question; Id have the 5 speed in the S4 or GT and the auto box in the GTS although given the values of 5 speed GTS's Im sure glad we bought when we did.....vroom!!!

And...overnight the value of the 1990 Porsche 928 fell through the floor with owners dumping them at crazy discounts. Owners were seen pushing their 1990 928s into lakes and rivers and tearing up the title as to not be dragged down with their plummeting values LOL.

The 1990 PSD systems had "Gylon" discs, which wore fairly quickly....most of the 1990 PSD limited slips that have not been "updated" have long since quit doing their job (they are worn out.) When the discs wear, the abrasive material ends up in the gear oil and can be very destructive to both pinion bearings and differential bearings. The discs were changed to a "Valeo" disc, made from a different material in 1991 (or late in 1990...I'm not positive.) When the original 1990 discs get replaced, the engaging lever for the PSD unit must also be replaced.

I hereby volunteer to pick up, (free of charge) all the 1990 928's that people want to abandon, to protect our lakes and streams... I will even take those pesky GT versions!

Some of the mechanical design problems with the GTS border on the absurd.....and it is quite a stretch to think of this car as being the "most evolved" 928, because of these mechanical "issues". All of these cars, until they are "repaired", fall behind the '89GT, in terms of mechanicals.

The GTS rear flares are very nice....and to a certain extent, "blind" people to the mechanical issues.
Could you clarify this? My 80 ROW was the biggest nightmare of a car I ever encountered second only to the Audi 100LS for mechanical and electrical issues. I was hesitant to buy another 928 because of it. I have yet to encounter any Porsche that doesn't have some nit picky or major issues from the factory the 911's are no better however my GTS has been pretty much flawless these past 14 years. The RDK is a bit touchy when it gets within a pound below its pressure setting and I have had to add a total of one quart between oil changes in all these years. Everything works and it has been a pleasure to drive. The Tbelt is an expensive and overly complicated expenditure otherwise a great ride for those long distance runs. My only complaint is battery drain which has plagued the car since day one was heavily looked into by Holbert Motors and the original owner, I have yet to resolve other than adding a tender when not driving.

It would appear by recent sales the GTS's are not holding value as well and the earlier cars in pristine condition are on the rise although I haven't seen another 5 speed sell recently.

ridicolous oil ingestion, AFAIK never completely fixed from porsche is the consequence of some project bugs/issues that Greg was mentioning. And oil dipstick showing the low level is only what can you see without opening the engine. I am rebuilding an engine from a 93 gts rogerbox, oil scrapers on pistons are next to be completely seized, piston pins lived without enough oil IMHO, rods have had better times, burnt oil clogged catalysts... Just cams are in healthy condition for a 90 k miles engine... I realized soon that my gts engine needs extensive cares, too.
