Looking for a specific car 1979 VIN 9289201723

My dad owned this car from 1979 to 1987.

i learned to drive in it as a kid.

I’ve been a long time member here and have had my own 1987 S4 for about a decade.

My dad passed away a few weeks ago and while cleaning out his stuff today I found a pile of maintenance records from 1983 that included the VIN to the 928.

It's not in the 928OC registry.

Thanks.

I already looked for it in the registry.

Cole sorry to hear about your dad,
god bless you and your family.

About the car, any details you can add would assist others that might have seen this car,
color, interior ,miles, trans type, options, wheels.

Thanks Stan! Hope all is well with you.

Its a USA 1979 Mocha Brown, all tan interior, 5 speed, no sunroof, would have needed some paint and body work on the drivers door and passenger fender.

Originally a Colorado car. We traded it in to Herbert Motors Jeep dealer in Longmont Colorado in 1987. 109k at trade in.

Had a few screw holes in the in the center armrest where the 1980s mobile phone was mounted.

Also missing the pliers....cause I still have them 😂

It wouldn’t surprise me if it reached the end of its life in a junkyard somewhere.

Have you tried hiring a private investigator? I think they'd be able to check all the DMVs for any registration information. Once they have a last registered owner, it would just be a matter of locating them to find out where the car is or what happened to it.

First, you have my condolences, finding his car is a worthy pursuit.

NelaK has a great point. At least start with a search of Colorado's database.

Best of luck on this one!

I’m still looking for this car.

I fully expect it to be a rotten shell somewhere.

I’ve posted this all over the various PCA pages on Facebook, local car groups, 928 pages and groups on Facebook and Pelican.

I’ve watched the nation wide Craigslist and eBay and emailed on every car that’s even close to the right description.

Talked to State Farm (they insured it), and evening have a couple of fiends in the DMV here.

And of course the 10 digit VIN keeps me from online electronic searches.

So far......nothing.

I wonder if 928 intl keeps a list of VIN's of the cars they have dismantled. I know that CLUE reports VIN's and insurance claims. If someone has access to the CLUE database?

To a large degree, privacy concerns have really limited this sort of thing.

The DMV won't release any details about car registrations or owners, not to an 'ordinary person'.
And while cops can run that sort of thing in some cases, releasing that to an 'ordinary person' is illegal and has consequences (See Droo's "#2" thread for a bit on that).

There are some really good reasons for it.

I suppose it might vary slightly by state, but state licensed Private Investigators and others can pull the owner info of any vehicle. The link you read and attached is not applicable. For instance, if a vehicle is towed, the storage facility wants to get it back to its owner / get paid and they will need the DMV to help them do it. Or if a lien holder wants to find their property (the vehicle) they would also need help from the DMV. The caveat is there needs to be a “legitimate” reason for the DMV to release the info, but believe me PI’s will pull the info for whatever reason they want, they don’t need to provide any documentation.

Still looking!

Now that everyone is sheltered in place. It would be a good time to go check the VIN on those old project cars you have been ignoring or ask a friend that you know has a 928 under a tarp somewhere

Rob Edwards 04-05-2020 02:16 PM

That VIN is not on the list of cars dismantled by 928Intl, at least as of 2014. At that point they'd done 46 US '79s and 9 Euros.

It’s time to refresh my search for the car I learned to drive in. My Dad’s old 1979 Porsche 928 VIN 9289201723.

My dad died in 2019 and I discovered the VIN in some old paperwork from 1982.

This car has either been crushed or it’s sitting as a dead project in someone’s garage or behind a barn. Hoping that someone might spot this post and have a lead for me.

Before you start offering suggestions on how to search. Please take a moment to read what has been done already.

It’s a pre-1982 VIN and only 10 digits. So can’t be “carfaxed” or any other form of electronic search.

I’ve filed all the forms with the DMV and even hired a private investigator, and have a contact at the DMV.

It hasn’t been registered in Colorado in so long it’s dropped out of the system.

I’ve been posting this on every car related group since 2019. Every Porsche group, 928 group, Rennlist, Pelican, checked the 928 Registry, run the vin to see if it was ever stolen, have automatic searches on eBay, Craigslist, BaT, etc for 1979 928s

I’ve reached out to any parts car listed nationwide that meets the specs.

I even found a car sitting in a field that’s only 2 VIN numbers away.

So, hoping someone knows someone with a car sitting in a garage, field, etc that could be it and just isn’t part of the internet landscape.

It’s a 1979 Mocha brown(some call it Mocha black) with tan interior. Sunroof delete, 5 speed, has at least 109k miles on it. (In 87 when we traded it in to Herbert Motors in Longmont Colorado.)

VIN 9289201723

Only surviving picture of the car. Original plate number was ST-5810
