928 Shops in DC Area
Hello,
New to the Porsche world and looking for some help. Today the wife and I inherited one of my childhoood dream cars a 83 928S. Its sort of a family heirloom but has been sitting in a car port for 15 years due to the deteriorating health of the original owner. Its old, needs a ton of work but since its free and we love the car, its rust free, and seems mechanically ok i would like make it a driver again.
any recomendations on specialist shops in the dc/MD area? I am not made of cash and am not looking to build a concours car but rather a sympathetic mechanical and cosmetic restoration of an extremely original car.
Thanks!

Welcome to Rennlist!
Hopefully some of our DC area members will have some good recommendations for you.
Stan (RL: Mrmerlin) is in the Philadelphia area not too far away, and holds 928 guru status. He’s not a sponsor/vendor and therefore can’t toot his own horn. But I can do it for him.
Stan?

- Do you have any mechanical inclination, at all or expect to hand off to someone else for all maintenance?
- Did the car have issues which kept it parked?
- The 1983 is kind of between the more valued 928s (1978/1979 and 1987-1995). Are you familiar with the value of the car in the state you'll be repairing towards? (i.e. if it is worth $8K and you need to put $10K into it to get there, even if not all at once, are you good with it?)
- Have you driven a similar 928? (Youthful enthusiasm may not hold up if you or your significant other simply don't like the ride)
- The car is likely going to need waterpump, timing belt, all other belts, fuel system cleaning and replacement of all fuel lines, injectors which may be hard to source, brake lines and brake work, likely some sensors/electrical elements here/there... the bottom line is you might be looking at $5K in parts just to get started and then if you farm out the work, another $5K (+ or x2) in labor. You MIGHT consider looking at what is available in the 928 market around the same build year as your car.
But be smarter than most folks and give it enough thought to figure out.... Is it worth it TO YOU?
Now, with all of the above said, do WHATEVER you want to do to extract JOY from the car! it has sat for 15 years. If it takes you 2 or 3 years to get it roadworthy and you learn to turn the wrench a bit, that MIGHT be a great way to extract JOY from ownership without immediately driving. If you simply want to have a driveable 928, the costs to get her running with a third party are steep and you might just consider selling your sleeping beauty and paying out another $5-7K to get a nice runner.
Whatever course you choose, there are MANY great people here and I guarantee learning from this community as part of your ownership!
Good Luck and Ask for Advice OFTEN!
All The Best,
Trey

If you post pictures of the engine, the interior and the exterior of the car it will add valuable info to your request

Thanks to you all. Appreciate the advice about value over cost. Its more of a passion project and the car will not be sold because of the familial attachment so even if I spend about 15 to 20K, I'll be ok with it. What y'all have said totally tracks with my research and I was prepared for it. I am able to do the interior work and most of general maintence/basic mechanical fixes myself and plan to. I'll be outsourcing anything that requires pulling the motor/transmission as well as the repaint that will be needed. I'm not looking to make it perfect, just functional and capable of a weekend road trip or two.
Stan, I'll PM you the pics once I figure out how to get them off my phone. The car looks worse than it is but it did run and was only parked because the owner had a stroke and wasn't able to drive any longer. The car put into long term storage on jackstands at that point, but its complete with everything down to the original spare, window toolkit etc.

Lots of help right here on RL. If you get in over your head Stan/Mrmerlin would be best for the mechanicals. Paint: Austin/RL: Kiln_Red has a shop in Scottsville, KY and really knows his way around the 928. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...4-rebirth.html Pics of your car no matter the condition would help...lots.
