Default RetroSound 4" Speaker Grills with Alpine Speakers

As I am restoring the euro, one of the items is 4" speakers in the door panels. As you can see in the first pic, aftermarket speakers were installed. I didn't like the look and they were blown. After doing some research, the Alpine speakers seem to come up as a good, affordable choice. After buying them, I noticed Alpine was a little light on the hardware as in no grills. While ordering something on Crutchfield the other day, I stumbled across Retrosound 4" grills. At $4 a piece, I said why not. To me, they are good quality grills and come closer to the stock look. they also fit the existing indention almost perfectly. Who has tried these? What do you guys think? All I need now is the 3" grills!! Anyone??

I still have hundreds of the smaller grills from my speaker kit.

I can send some to you.

Brad,
Those look good!!
I”m guessing those 4inch Alpine might be a decent alternate to fit behind the stock mid door speaker grills as well?

As for the tweeters grills.
I bought some 89 “dead” tweeters long ago (from 928 Interational) when the 89 grills were still available, bought several of those.
My GTS needed new grills over the time I had it. So having the 6.5s, 4inch, and tweeter grills “stockpiled” turned out to be a good move.
I think they are NLA now, but if you could find some at a dismantler like International. But I think they throw them out. At least when Jim was still there they literally would throw them out and just keep the door panels. All the speaker housings and grills are starting to become VERY hard to find now, so hopefully they keep them now.

I did find those on Amazon which look to be about the same mesh pattern.

https://www.amazon.com/CNSZNAT-Speaker-Round-Grill-Black/dp/B077GP2RHW/ref=pd_cp_23_3?pd_rd_w=n4s5X&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=5YTE9WYE5CHEA3PFMTZ8&pd_rd_r=575c7712-3392-11e9-819c-d39f51714f02&pd_rd_wg=cdM2O&pd_rd_i=B077GP2RHW&psc=1&refRID=5YTE9WYE5CHEA3PFMTZ8 https://www.amazon.com/CNSZNAT-Speaker-Round-Grill-Black/dp/B077GP2RHW/ref=pd_cp_23_3?pd_rd_w=n4s5X&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=5YTE9WYE5CHEA3PFMTZ8&pd_rd_r=575c7712-3392-11e9-819c-d39f51714f02&pd_rd_wg=cdM2O&pd_rd_i=B077GP2RHW&psc=1&refRID=5YTE9WYE5CHEA3PFMTZ8

So although the grills look about right, not sure if the housings will accept the grill or not. If you look on amazon (down in the add) they have surrounds, but they don’t quite look stock??

If I remember correctly the tweeter housings on the stock stereos (grills) were as follows:
83-88 Screw on
89-UP Spap on

Some may call it blasphemy, but I’m in the process of upgrading the stereo in the 79 to the later model (round grill) door speakers.
I kept the old door panels in boxes, but had later model door panels recovered in Cork so they’d look a little more modern. I like the look and could go back to stock if needed.

Good luck w the project, let us know how it comes out!

Brad,
Not a great pic, but here's how the 79 door speaker grills came out.

looks very good from that picture. You should be happy!! Hans is sending some of his original stock 3" grills designed for vefa tweeters. I will share how they look with stock drivers when I get them....

Also the alpine drivers fit for doors from 84 and up and have received good reviews from other 'listers...
