Falls area where we stopped for box lunch.. The gentleman on the right is an original owner of a 1984 928 that has 8000 miles on it. It has been sitting in his garage for 35 years. He also owns a Contach and Lamborghini Diablo! He’s 81. Pretty butts Dinner crew after the car show Physically abusing Zach’s cat converter!
As we left the waterfalls stop, I pulled in behind Betrand (so I wasn't giving Shawn all the video time in his Boxster!) and after a short run we got onto Interstate 87 for the race to Chestertown;
This wasn't anything like the scale of a Frenzy, but it was such a good time. Having everything right there at Curt's place was super convenient, and the roads were amazing! So much less traffic than NOVA.
Allow me to join the choir of happy "campers" in extending gratitude to Curt and Nancy for allowing us to invade their hide-way and, turn their peaceful lifestyle upside down for couple of days - much appreciated !!!
"Curt's Garage" got real workout this time. Stan was a very busy man. This certainly wasn't a "holiday" for him - just another day at work ;-)
The hi-light for me was the "cat-gutting" demo late into Saturday evening - priceless. Not a job for roadside emergency operation. Took at least half dozen "burly" men to accomplish the task.

Curt's EV bike - 928 backup. I'm worried this event will turn into an EV Camp, in not too distant future. I hope I'll be too old by then to attend.
The activity around the cat on Zach's car was interesting and fun.
Zach's car broke down on the fun run. He was the trailing car and was left behind. He had no cell service where he has, but a passerby picked him up. By the time his group noticed his absence and someone got back to him, he was gone. He had his car flatbedded to Curt's and left again to buy his rescuer dinner, so the work proceeded on his car without him. His car was put on the lift and started and it ran like hell, with a terrible racket up near the front. He also had a minor fuel leak just past the pump. The car was running on the lift and the attention was up front where the noise was. It was indescribable, but there was a significant whistling component. The car could barely stay running and it wouldn't take any gas.
The guy with the 'patina car' (he's wearing the brown hat and blue shirt in the pics) said something about the catalytic converter being blocked. A couple people put their hands over the exhaust and said that it sure didn't seem like there was enough pressure there. Also, the cat was scorching hot, and the temp on the pipe past the cat was a hundred degrees cooler. Stan unbolted the connections between the exhaust and the cat and dropped the cat a couple inches. The car fired up into a smooth (and loud) idle, and would rev with no problems. The insane noise was mostly the exhaust gasses being forced out past the gaskets upstream of the catalytic converter.
We dropped the cat and Jay found a crowbar of some sort and started reaming the hell out of it; stuff broke, chunks came out, and dust flew. Bbut the real progress happened when Curt brought out the big hammer drill and a two-foot long auger. That made short work of the internal structure, and the hook end of the crow bar pulled everything out. A rinse with the hose and a quick inspection showed that the inside of the cat was completely empty. It was bolted back in and the car was running normally again.
The leaking fuel line needed about 5 feet of 10mm (3/8") hose, and the plan was to get that at the auto parts store the next town over on Sunday morning. I guess that must have happened, judging by the pic of Zach's car with Tony's rental at a rest stop somewhere.
It's always fun, and often educational when a 928 gathering happens. Camp 928 III was no exception!

I hope Zach ultimately thinks of all that went on here - there’s much more - as an epic story. The repair work took the place of a quiet campfire, but I don’t think anyone was complaining. It was a thrilling team effort, but I have to give special kudos to Stan for his tireless work on maybe a dozen cars over the weekend. We sat down later to watch the Le Mans race, and he was snoring within seconds!
I was plenty tired, too, after about a hundred “Hey, Curt! Do you have a ______?” Next year, I’m training a garage manager!
(The needed fuel hose was acquired from the same hole-in-the-wall shop that did the flat-bedding, saving us a trip to the “big city”.)

I must say, I think my car looks forward to this event each year as much as I do. It usually wakes up after Winter hibernation a bit grumpy, but settles into happiness once it finds the open road heading to the Adirondacks, and just loves the fast, smooth, and uncluttered roads once there. I think it really wants to relocate from our urban environment to the country.
The "tech session" on Zach's car was top notch. I even got to spend quality time enjoying that fine Pascha interior as key operator while it was up on the lift.
