Mirror on a stick, anyone?

Question Mirror on a stick, anyone?

Couple of weeks ago while changing the wheels (the car was up on a lift), I noticed that the engine pan and the front left corner of the underside is covered in oil. The hose[s] to/from oil cooler seemed to be culprit. Before replacing the hoses, I decided that replacing the o-rings in the connection from the hoses to the cooler would be a more prudent approach (when cleaned hoses looked fine). About half a quart of oil was lost and replaced in the process.

I have a tendency to check oil frequently (no trust to the oil pressure gage!), but I admit that I haven’t done it for about a week And last weekend I did do some rather spirited driving during the 6speedonline.com run to Carmel All and all the car probably ran about 600 to 700 miles since the last time I checked oil. This morning, once I got to work I check oil and discovered the oil level being just a tad above the lower notch. I added half a quart and things seemed to return to normal (oil level between the notches).

Question: any way do check for the hose leak without raising the car? I won’t have access to a lift until tomorrow night and wouldn’t want to be spewing oil all over the highway. Thank you.


p.s. I tried checking with a rag but it’s been raining for several days here and the belly pan is covered in dirt and soot.

While there are many techniques to try, one that comes to mind is as follows:
Put on your finest white dress shirt, secure the cuff with Porsche engraved cufflinks (silk tie optional): Lying on your back under the left front corner, reach under and wave your arm about as if you're about to get the one and only exclusive invitation to assist Janet Jackson in selecting and modeling body jewlery for the next event with an audience in excess of 85 million.
When you withdraw your arm, the dirt and soot will stand apart from any rich golden smears of oil, should the hose(s) still be leaking.


The critical things to monitor are obviously ( and seriously) oil pressure and level - doesn't sound like it was a signifigant leak. If you have the reach, should be possible to wrap a clean rag around each hose and slide down towards the filter mount. To check the last bit, wind some rag on a length of coat hanger, and probe.
