Default 928 S2 Purchase..!

Hi all,

This Saturday coming I will be entering the World of the TransAxle Porsche by collecting a 928 S2 I struck a deal on at the end of last week; historically I have only had dealings with the 911 [one 912], so very much looking forward to getting involved with this V8 Beast..

I was wondering if there has been any chat about the car I have chosen, the registration is B752 OSB, was advertised on Ebay and elsewhere, and is clearly a Project.. It's the wrong colour for a start [resprayed some time ago Dark Metallic Blue], with some Cup 1 slotted on in place of the Slots..

Has there been any discussion on it..? Thanks in advance..!

Dont know your car and didnt see it on ebay, are you Uk? Welcome to the pond, the folks here have everything you need to sort it out.Have a look at new owner section of the site. Pay particular attention to timing belt, flexplate and engine bay fuel pipes and power steering section. Basically stopping the engine going bang or the car catching fire..never a good thing.

I have 2xS2s one in an advanced state of repair, the other just in a state...

Thanks for the reply Yes, am in the UK, down on the South Coast in Brighton..

Ebay Listing is/was here >> https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1984-Pors...d/132921468171

Have found it advertised back in 2015 for £8,000 with misfire issues [as well as others] that the current owner/Vendor sorted once he'd bought it.. It went to Paul Anderson in Stroud for the Work, so high calibre stuff..

It's a Manual, so does the Flexplate issue apply..?

What should I be looking out for with regards Timing Belts..?

Thanks again..!!

As an 84, generally the flex plate is not an issue, as Porsche did not remove the circlip from the shaft in production until the MY 85 model (without the circlip, the shaft migrates forward causing the thrust bearings to mill the block on the inside o the engine). Also, my understanding is that manuals are far less prone to the issue. However, if you read the website for the super clamp (Black Sea R&D I think), the literature supports the notion that TBF can occur on either manual or auto box cars.
Other things to watch for are old fuel lines and power steering lines that weep or leak. The fluids are flamable. I'd replace or repair, which is easy DIY work, and not terribly expensive. The cup 1's are gorgeous wheels and very desirable. However, you'll have no problem finding inexpensive sets of flat dish wheels if you like the stock look.

Welcome to the shark tank! These are great cars, and a nice change from the 911 experience.

Edit: Looking at the ebay pictures, it looks like it has had a more recent top end refresh. Your fuel lines and power steering lines may be OK. Do you have receipts? If not, ask Roger or Mark or Dave (at 928R-Us, 928 International, or 928 Specialists) if they know the car and whether they sold refresh parts for it. It is a nice looking car, with a great looking interior, and that awesome twin dizzy high HP motor!

The t-belt issue refers to interference engines, which I believe yours isn't. Welcome to the shark tank.

From pics I can't be sure about fuel lines. That Temp II (not positive ID on older cars) boot is original /broken so the refresh is not a complete job.

The interior shows as nicely as the paint, you have a winner for a fair price, methinks. Enjoy.

Provided it is the M28/21 engine code, you have the 10.4:1 C/R which means tall pistons. Very likely it IS an interference engine, and a timing belt failure will result in valve/piston crash damage. Removing the timing belt cover on your car will give you a view of the timing belt and at least one gear. It would appear that removal of the upper right TB cover would be easiest, just under the right intake duct, and behind the large water hose. Use a hi intensity lamp to inspect the INSIDE of the timing belt, and note any cracks, or defects on the juncture of the bump on the timing belt and the flat below it.

Looks like a lot of coolant hoses have been replaced recently with new intake boots as well. Showing the prev owner was trying to hunt down the problem with misfires. The plug and coil wires appear fairly new as well. Intermittent misfires are quite hard to diagnose. Without more detailed info, hard to make a suggestion.

Congrats on the purchase, aside from the steering being the wrong spot(heehe), looks like a rather nice fast mover car. Jack up the rear wheels, put the trans in neutral, release the handbrake and spin one wheel forward. Note if the other side moves forward, or backward. If forward, you have limited slip differential.

Follow the red/orange vac hose to the shiny bronze fuel damper in the front of the engine. Just to the rear, and a bit to the right(when viewed facing the engine from front) under the cross brace is a blue Bosch elec connector with a black rubber boot sticking straight up. There are wires showing just inside the black boot. That is the Temp II sensor and sets the enrichment of the fuel based on temperature of the engine. It's a rather important sensor.

Will check on it for sure, and ask the Vendor, thank you..

I have a cousin to your car in Eastbourne.

Don't forget Luxury Car Spares at Seddlescombe, they are quite good for non perishables. Best of luck with the project

Second that re Luxury Car Spares, I'm in Ireland but have bought multiple spares from them over the last 4 years whilst undergoing complete restoration of my S2 which is now my daily driver.

Fantastic..! As I mention above however, the original colour will be going back on my S2 in due course.. Lovely example yours though.. Love those Slots..

I am originally from Eastbourne, and met up with a 993 Targa owner form Eastbourne at the Weekend, might have to do the same with you when I get my S2..

I love the fact you have it as a daily driver, that's what I am thinking for the one I am rebuilding. Doesn't seem to make sense doing it and not using it..
