Getting the Simard cams installed, and figuring out the cam timing. They don't have the little nubs on the cams that you line up with the chain links to get the intake and exhaust cams timed properly. I'm glad that when Mike was designing them I talked him into include wrench boses on them so you could turn them and get them dialed in. getting out the dial indicator. no pun intended.
The lobe location will not be that far different than stock. You can set them next to a stock set of cams and mark the basic timing marks for the chain.
Greg, I will give that a shot from pictures. I haven't had my hands on a stock set of cams in about 15 years, so I'm a little rusty. I do have one of the knock off's of the factory cam silhouette so I will give that a shot tomorrow.
The factory cam silhouette should get you close.
I can get you some references of the chain location marks to the lobes, if you need that.
Taking the cams in and out to get the chains on the right tooth just isn't that much fun.
You should try it the 968 chain tensioner, and 2 of them was a royal pain. It's enough to make the Pope drop F Bombs. I used a time card at one point to see how much time I spent on cam timing when we were doing the 968 variocam on the 928. I had over 130 hours on cam timing alone.
Just setting the cam timing on a stock 968 is enough to make one crazy....I can't imagine what it must have been like in a 928 application, with two of those things.
The problem with the Porsche Factory 968 method of setting the cam timing is that it only works when the tensioners are almost brand new. Once the tensioners wear, there is too much leakage past the piston to be able to control the tensioner position...the cam timing becomes a continually changing thing. About 75% of the 968s I've seen that have had anyone mess with the cam timing are incorrectly set.
