OEM v. aftermarket windshield replacement
 

this has been discussed many times, but hoping for more clarity so I can make a decision. my windshield needs replacing (thank you 18 wheeler) and prefer an OEM part.
prefer to keep original branding. current part number is 928 541 011 11 and a little over 1,000. in florida, replacement glass is 100% covered, with no deductible, and no
increase in premium. I called safelite, and the self pay cost for aftermarket glass, installed, is 760.00. geico informed me that they would be OK with OEM, if I paid
the difference. not sure if they base the difference on the 760. pay yourself cost, or if its based on a wholesale cost.

has anyone been down this road and what is the success rate?

if you press your insurance for OEM or Porsche glass it will depend on your state laws. There can be a difference and some aftermarket glass is worse than others. Most of the difference is the distortion around the corners in the lower portion of the glass. Depending on how persuasive you can be, determines your success rate.

my windshield is sigla, and all other glass is sekurit. is this correct?

I have the same in my 1991 S4 so I assume they are the originals.

You have some strange stuff going on in this area in US! windscreens here in Oz are sometimes covered by insurance, sometimes not. Almost always involve a deductible. Anyway, when I imported the 928, I had to have the screen replaced as part of the inspection 'Roadworthy'. Can only get them locally with a light green tint across the top, they said - OK with me. No question about OEM. Damage - maybe US$200 fitted .n No delay, so it was in stock somewhere. No problems at all with glass quality, fitting, anything. Why are they so $$$ over there?

Also running Safelite, zero issues, installed in the parking garage at my work and $0 out of pocket in NC.

Replaced mine last year. Had to wait 2 weeks for a Sekurit one to come from Germany, and the total shop bill to my insurance was around $2k. I didn't want non-OEM. AZ has glass included, no extra charge. My collector car insurance is Modern/Corvette owners. Looks great, no distortion, antenna in the glass (normal for 88 MY).

Porsche only has windshields with antennas. So whatever part# you order (and there has been some confusion), what you will get is a Sigla windshield with a "P" Porsche-parts logo and an antenna in the glass.

I am incredibly jealous of the windshield prices you guys are seeing.

I've called around locally and the best I could find was around $3000+ CAD. Considering the price difference, maybe I should just plan a road trip...

Safelite folks here in Hi say they don't have and cannot get. Does someone on the mainland have contact info for a Safelite dealer that has gotten them before? Maybe I can get the Safelite part number from them and have my local Safelite people bring one in for me.

Shopping for glass, not just using insurance, has always had a wild range of prices and quality and little relation of one to the other. Two of our newer cars have a rock chip and replacing them is about double the 928 cost. OTOH buying glass directly from a Mercedes dealer is about 1/4 the cost of glass from a Porsche dealer.

Is this still the case, that Porsche only has windshields with antennas? That is what my glass guy says Porsche told him. I have a 1984, original had no antenna.
