Default Back to the Future and Back to the 928 Again

I have posted on here off and on the last few years. The 928 has been a fleeting dream of mine for the past 15 years or so when I first wet my Porsche appetite with a 1985.5 944. Since that time, I've owned a handful of what I'd consider fun cars: Fiero GT, Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo, Mustang GT, Challenger R/T and SRT... However, every time I think to buy another 'toy", the 928 pops into my head. In 2015, I test drove a 1989 S4 that I wrote a thread about but passed on given the helpful advice I received on this forum. I still think about that car, and the impression it left on me. Never before have I been in a car that felt as well sorted and put together. Such a wonderful grand tourer. However, shortly after passing on that car, I purchased a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 since it was something my wife and I could both agree on and still have that car today. In July, I acquired a pristine 25K original mile 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 originally from California. Now that I have that 80s icon, I've started looking at others and once again the 928. However, I only have room for two old cars, so either the DeLorean or Mustang would have to go. The Mustang's values have been flat for a few years, while the DeLorean and 928 have climbed a lot. Thank you, Generation X! I am seriously considering parting with my Mustang to get a 928 but am still not sure which era. I used to be dead set on the S4 but have recently been looking at the 1985-1986S because they look more aggressive to me. I also like that the intakes don't flake quite like the S4s haha. I was told by Volo Auto Museum this past summer, they'd put my Mustang up for 35K on consignment and keep whatever they sell it for above that or cut me a 30K check outright if I did not want to wait. I do know I could score a hell of a 928 in that price range or more likely less money. Thoughts?

Here are some pictures of the current cars:

So, are you primarily an investor or a driver?
As an investor, I would think the value of the Delorean will peak when those who were kids when the movie came out reach their sixties, so there is some upside. The Mustang has already reached it’s peak. Long term, I see more downside to the Delorean after it peaks.
As a driver, the Delorean is a piece of crap. The Mustang, while not a modern car, is a fun driver.
What are your priorities?

Sell the Stang and get an S4. Don’t worry about the intake paint, cause no matter what you buy you will likely be doing an intake re-fresh anyway.

I had such low expectations for the DeLorean before I drove it that when I did, I was pleasantly surprised. With the 5 speed and aftermarket Eibach suspension, it is peppy enough and handles flat. Power to weight ratio is close a standard 944. It is not as bad as many think, especially compared to what else was around in 1981. It is slow by modern standards for sure, but so is my Mustang (351C 2V). Its iconic status has transcended its shortcomings. It is certainly no Porsche 911 or 928 of the era, but what really was? To answer your question, I would consider myself a driver. I look at classic cars as a hobby, not a place to make money though it is possible. I do realize the 928 can produce eye watering repair bills, so any increase in value will be off set in maintaining it anyway.

why does the spoiler on the Mach 1 look like it's installed backward?

That is one sweet Mustang. If the rest of it looks as good as those pictures, I'd keep it.

I don't think it's backwards.

Searching images shows the end tips go forward on a lot of other cars.

It's just tipped way back. I think the angle is adjustable on them.

Could be wrong on all of this, though. Not a Mustang expert.

I would not part with that Mustang under any circumstance. You have one of the great examples! The delorean is a curiosity car that you’ll eventually get tired of. Sell the Mach 1 and you will not easily find one to replace it. (Full disclosure I am a shameless mustang guy, and get teased for it by the good folks here) I currently have a 12 Boss 302 Leguna Seca). Get the 928 - they are great cars; but I’d counsel to keep the Mach 1. Regardless, first world problems for sure.

Yeah, it is not backwards just angled a bit more than some I've seen. I've never touched it in 3.5 years, but now I might adjust it a bit.

Every time I think of parting with it, I look at it sitting in the garage or drive it and start to change my mind. I could get a lift in my garage, but it'd be super tight. DeLorean is about 44 inches off the ground, Mustang is 51. 928 is is same or just a smidge lower I think. My ceilings are 9ft on back half of garage and 10ft on front half due to support beam. Yes, the Mustang looks just as good elsewhere and is pretty much bone stock minus electronic ignition. The only thing not original is the color. It was born Bright Gold Metallic. It was also not born with the fold down rear seat, spoilers, and rear window louvers it has now. It has A/C and the original 8 track player still in it, which of course does not work haha

Alright, since the spoiler is not on backwards, I would keep it for sure.

For more storage check out a single post drive on type lift. It may be tight but might work. I'm now looking at the two lifts below:
110v: https://www.bestbuyautoequipment.com...l-sp-6k-ss.htm

220v: https://aclifts.com/lifts/m-1-single-post-car-lift/

Do not sell the Mustang - if it was a white '69, I'd make you an offer right now.

Do buy a 928 and find the room.

There is a white 1969 Mach 1 eBay right now with a Buy It Now of 32.5K, which is a great deal if the car is as clean as it appears. I will start looking into lift solutions. I'm pleasantly surprised at the the level of support for the Mustang on a Porsche forum.
