Four digit # on gearbox reads7540

Been sitting for a since summer due to vibration, changed front wheelbering and tightning up the shifter bolt connected to gearbox.. and cleaning cleaning cleaning

Gearbox #928.301.305.4 R Then to right after this number is 7540 ,

This marking appears on radiator someone Once told me they scene this on another 928 and there is a reason for it? Any of you 928 knowledge buffs have an idea?

Welcome. I saw your 'add on' to the Prototype thread and was going to suggest starting a new thread.

The number you show from the trans is just the casting number for the case. Real trans serial number should be a "G/xx" something.

Unfortunately, the only folks who can tell you anything about the options the car came with is Porsche themselves. The guys on here only have access to info for cars 80 and later.

You noted in the other thread that you've owned it since 2001. That's a serious length of time. How did you first find it? Any cool stories, trips, adventures (mis-adventures are usually funnier) or that sort of thing?

Welcome to Rennlist!

spend a little time reading the “new visitors” thread at the top. Invest in a paid membership so go can build a signature section that includes some info on the car. Like the year, market, gearbox, etc. that will save you the trouble of having to type it into every post. We read a lot of posts, plus threads show up later when search pops it up. No way to know that you told us the year in a completely separate thread.

So so what year is your car?

I found it on my way to test drive an old vette.. on my way back from testing the vette I stopped and took it for a spin and have had it ever since... it had around 60,000 and not a scratch on it... now it’s going on 150,000 , I’ve put a clutch in years ago and recently did the timing belt head gaskets and water pump.. lots of fun taking it on trips... Had a few dog fights on the interstate, but not to many things can keep up with the 928 when u drop the hammer already doin 70 mph it’s for sure a top end car!!

Mine is 10 serial numbers away - #1041. Mocha brown with brown/black pasha seats. Funny to think they were just a few slots away on the assembly line 40 years ago.
All the best,
Josh

Another number that you may find interesting (and that is rarely discussed here) is the production number under the glove box. The number is explained in this post.

Love it. Had a bunch of guys looking under their glove boxes for this number last summer at a PVGP dinner. Nobody believed me about this/!
