Default Porken tensioner question

im buying an 86.5 928. It has a ppi from Greg brown(not too bad an exam) ,and will go back to his shop in 2 weeks. In speaking to the po he indicated he put in a porker tensioner when doing tb.He said there has been an update to the tensioner since he installed it. Anyone have info on update and is it necessary. Is the porker a good thing?

Search is your friend on this one. Many many threads have debated this.

AKA "PKT".

The discussions can seem a little religious, although it seems that both the original and the PKT are OK, when installed correctly. My agnostic, over-simplified summary: Experienced professionals may prefer the original since they are comfortable doing the tensioning (and the later tension check), and for some other good reasons. A tension tool is required, but the "Kempf" tool is not expensive. When being worked on by someone like me, far from any experienced professional, a car may be better off with the semi-automatic tensioning from pulling the pin on a PKT.

The po may be indicating that it has an early porken and that the latest porken is a better fit.
Check the gap between the tensioner and arm.

I fitted the porken black on my 86.5, the gap is around 9mm and too big for my liking, I'll be swapping it out when time allows.

You're in great hands so no worries

If you have GB looking at it - then just do what ever he says. That’s all you need to know

I have a euro 928S of 1980, and I can say that Porkentensioner is the best upgrade one can buy for the 928.
Advantages :
- easy install of new TB
- always correct tension
- less wear on cam wheels
- no maintenance needed on the tension
- much more reliable than original Tensioner

Seriously --- that is NOT all you need to know. Everything is more complicated in this world. I've installed both but didn't live with the porken for very long b/c I sold the car. As far as I know there have been no issues with it for the present owner.
Greg is very respected. BUT there are positives and negatives to both systems and there have been cat fights here. I'm just saying that you should do as much research as you can tolerate.
Being a sycophant to either side is just that and you may find yourself wishing you had read up on it.

OR you may be happy following blindly along.

I love all my forums 912,914 and 928. They all provide so many views and opinions, some very strong and emphatic. I especially enjoy words like syncophant.

Anyway ill I’ll see what Greg says and probably follow his advise. He definitely is a specialist ,knowledgeable with the 928.

I gotta vote for Porker myself. KPIG 107(oink)5, Freedom CA, or KPYG 94(oink)5, Cayucas-San Lois Obispo. The last Great American Radio Station. Worldwide at www.kpig.com.

Have had the PKT installed in my 87 since 2013. ( Replaced original oil filled during TB/WP replacement.) I also replaced the TT and original clamps with Constantine's superior replacements at the same time. Fast forward 2018 and 31K miles later. The belt tension is still perfect. I will be checking the TT for movement next week and will post the results and picks. Other than the recent twin oil cooling line replacement two weeks ago it's been a great relativity problem free 5 year run.
