Default Factory Cloth Upholstery?

Has anyone ever seen a shark with cloth interior? This showed up on EBay, I wonder if it is a true US model ...

Although it looks similar to the factory cloth interior.......not sure if it is. Look at the door panel inserts.......I don't think they were ever cloth no matter what version the interior. Looks like maybe a redo.....

That is the same cloth interior that I have on my 79. I dont know if mine is original to my car, but it is the same fabric and design as that one on ebay.

Cloth was an option would have probably been a customer ordered car one who insisted that it be cloth etc... and waited for it to be built . The 928s built for dealer inventory all were usually pretty " boring " ....red , white , black with black or tan interior leather seats ONLY ....mostly automatic with a sunroof . Please no hate mail if you have a blk on blk auto with sunroof the point was the dealers were not interested in having a $60,000 car in inventory with "different" colors / options they found it hard enough to sell without making it more unique .

The door inserts nearly ALWAYS matched the seats .......unless it had the wood option .....

I agree with Jim - I'll bet this car was ordered by the original owner as opposed to just taking one off the showroom floor. It is a very interesting, very cool paint and interior combination. Made all the more interesting that it's over 15 years old. In the mid-80s, people liked big, bold, solid colors like red and white and black. And everyone wanted leather in their $70K Porsche because the other partner at the law firm has leather in his BMW.

So I would say that unlike most color combos on 928s, this one looks better today than it did back then. And the cloth is just too cool.

I would contend that a husband and wife ordered this car together. Hubby picked the options and wifey picked the paint and interior. Note that the car is pretty loaded option-wise. Rear AC, heated seats, sunroof. So this car was no bargain. But the color and interior are such unusual choices that they seem...almost feminine? More like "non-male". But I don't want to be sexist here. They show a thoughtfulness and familiarity with colors and fabrics and textures that is more in line with the interests shown by women more often than men. There. That's a pretty PC way to put it.

The rather limited wear showing on the drivers seat side bolster would indicate a driver of smaller stature which could possibly reinforce the "feminine" input theory which was suggestion .

Cool cloth interior

I like the interior of this car. There was another option: Porsche cloth interior. I wish I knew where to get some of that Porsche cloth or the cloth in this interior. You see, I am a vegan and am at odds with the use of leather. I think about it everytime I sit in the car. (hypocrisy! hypocrisy! I hear in my head) So I searched for someone to recover the seats in vinyl with Porsche cloth or this kind of cloth, but to no avail yet. And I have a complete matching leather interior (except for the dash and pod) in addition to the one in my car. Want to trade?? Anyway, cloth is warmer in winter and cooler in summer than leather. I'll probably go on listening to the voice in my head for awhile until I hit the lottery...but I don't play the lottery.

Default Re: cloth interior

Looks like normal Euro 'bargain model' cloth seats. Some normal non Club Sport first year S4's even had old style door panels with perforated speaker holes in here. If someone really really wants cloth interior, I'm sure swap can be made between USA and Europe if US guy pays shiping costs.

I'm pretty sure I looked at and drove this car last year when it was for sale by the private owner. Overall I think the car was in decent condition and I remember that it drove well. The owner at the time did not seem like a "car guy" and he had it parked in his office parking garage. It did not have the extra-long shifter when I drove it (I would remember that thing). I think he was asking $10,000 for it. The combo of the purple exterior and the cloth interior was way too much for me even though I thought the price was good.

Oh, I specifically remember the owner stating that engine had been rebuilt. When I suggested that it had broken a timing belt at one time he was adament that it did not. I was not going to buy it so I did not pursue it any further. The engine felt strong to me but get a PPI.

Of course, the above only applies if it is the same car I looked at.

Our infamous Prof Ott has a Blue 87 5-sp that has this type of cloth interior. Very nice Blue/blue car..non metallic blue exterior that looks awesome. This was a Canadian spec car at one time..

Nice to see some variation from leather....

Also, Mike Schimdt has an 88? that has cloth interior too..except his cloth is "Porsche Script"..as in Porsche written diagonally across the seat...... and Mikes is the only one I have ever seen with this interior.

Remember that in Europe leather was an option throughout most of the 928s production run. There were different types of cloth over the years, including the Porsche cloth, Pinstripe (as shown here), and OpArt
(officially called "Pasha"), plus some more options. The door inserts matched the cloth in the seats - unless of course it was a special order.

Since most of the later models I've seen here in the US had the door panel inserts match the door panel color rather than the seat color, it is quite likely that on later models the inserts were leather when the seats were cloth.

You could order any material you wanted for extra cost, providing it would be suitable for upholstery. Or you could order any of the materials shown in the color booklets for the appropriate year.

For a long time, Europeans were not all that crazy about full leather seates because of the coldness in the winter time. And since I have a Saab with heated leather seats vs. a 928 without, I can still see a point in this. In Europe, every little detail is an option, and the luxury car manufacturers nicle and dime you for every convenience that we take for granted here in the US. On the other hand, it is common in Europe to custom order your car.

As Jim pointed out, if you wanted anything but standard basic [and sometimes] boring, you'd have to go the custom order route and wait - from my observation a very un-American way of buying a car, but also a very rewarding one. Some people went as far as picking up their beast in Stuttgart at the factory and driving it through Europe before having it shipped. Talk about bonding with your car...
