I like your description too
There is no need to mention the 928 S4 Club-Sport, and the 928 S4 with Sport Equipment (official names of the 928 CS and the 928 SE), even if they are the link between the manual S4 and the GT.
Porsche often referred to first series of model as 'Normal'.
I don't use the OB phrase, never liked it and it has no connection with Porsche.
People who aren't aware find it confusing. I use 'Early' or 'Classic'.

Interesting. I like that.
Now does "S1" or "S3" have any connection with Porsche? Obviously S and S4 does and also S2 in the UK. But what about those other two?
Cool! The last time I went to Wikipedia to read about the 928 was probably 7 years ago and that table was definitely not there. Whoever made it decided to leave out the "S3" terminology. But hey it is a wiki, maybe someone should edit it.

Not as far as I can tell.
There was never a Porsche designated the "S1" or "S3". The chart Drooman posted shows the official designations, and is correct to the best of my knowledge.
The 'first' S (which would be the 80 - 83 Euro), the S2 outside of the UK and the S3 were all called "928S" by Porsche, as was the 83 & 84 US.
Given that those 4 cars have 4 rather different engines (3 16v, one 32v) with 3 different types of fuel injection ( One K-Jet, one L-Jet, two LH 2.2), it gets confusing to say "928S".
So they have become, by common usage, the "Euro S", "S2", "S3" and "S" respectively.
Now there's a nice definitive chart.. I like this one...

We could always use the Audi designation ("UR") or original.....
as in UR 928
Agree, very definitive chart although any thoughts on whether my 1985 Hong Kong delivered 928 should be referred to an S or an S2 ? I think Hong Kong was a colony of the UK up until 1997.
In Germany, they do use UR 928
In France, we either refer to them as the 4,5l, or the 240 hp or the "Mamie" (Grandma). I may be responsible for the later
Brisbane928, your car is officially a 1985 928S RoW RHD. But a 928S(2) would be enough.
Can't talk to any other market than Canada, but if I go into my local dealer with my VIN, my 928GT comes out as an S4. I always understood that what made my S4 a GT was my list of options, which were the manual gearbox, the wheels, the suspension, the head and cams, the brain box, etc. But Porsche seems to think it is a specifically optioned S4.
Cheers, Ian
