'81 auto - value
A local is selling his family car that hasnt ran for + 10 years. The owner had issues with the car (perhaps timing belt) and took some the front end apart. The project was delayed for a variety of reasons and then the owner past away.
Bottom line; its a '81 MY auto not running that essentially, if the engine tuns over, will need at least a timing belt project (belt, gears, w/p) or even a full engine build. 928 Int big sale coming so perhaps can source engine there.

Hi Malcolm,
Non-interference - aerosol fogging oil in the plug wells and (gently) turn the crank. If it turns, even with the TB off, likely good to go and proceed to a TB/WP, far easier than an S4 - compression/leak down can be checked later, but generally not an issue.
Do look at the left cam nose, as some do break and a possible reason for the PO's tear down.

Non-running 81 auto still doesn't command much. Depending on condition of body and interior, $500-$1000
If it's a 78-79 5 speed, double to triple that. If it's for Docmirror, $250.

As been said many times before its perhaps needing $15k in parts/repairs to be a $10k car for sale.........cheers
