When I'm done washing I always try and take it for a quick spin, heavy on the gas a few times, to clear the water from the rear taillights. Otherwise it can sit there till your next joyous ride.

High $$$$$ chamois for the dry followed by buffing cloths (very soft). Water spots galore if I don't.

Always wash in the shade with the car cool to the touch. First I hose it down with pressure to knock the dirt and big chunks off using cool water. Then I use a cotton mit gently in straight lines, not circles, from top to bottom. Nylon or synthetic mits will scratch the finish. I use Armour-all brand car wash because I like the smell. Rinse. Dry with clean chamois or 100% cotton towels. The best polishing cloths are Gerber 100% cotton cloth diapers. I really feel for owners of black cars. That has got to be the most difficult color to polish as far as showing swirls and scratches.

The brushless/high pressure automatic washes around here have no rails. Just bumps. I use them frequently during the winter because it has high pressure floor mounted undercarriage nozzles that cleans any salt off as you drive in.

Oh yeah, I start the drying process with the leaf blower. Its a comercial unit with some real power. Unlike an air compressor its dry air so you're not blowing oil all over the car. Works awesome to get 98% of the water off and out of the trim, lights, doors, wheels, locks..... i usually take the tail lights and the reflector off the GTS b/f I wash the car. I do the final dry with a terry cloth towel. Have used the synthetic chamois and they streak something terrible. Not to mention, the older they get the worse they work.

We have a soft cloth brand new washer here, the only thing Im careful of is that I put alittle pressure on the steering wheel to the right so it doesnt scrape up my outer polished rims. It hasnt scratched anything in 7 washes. then I jump out and use some spray wax on it while drying off the parts the blower missed. Results: Car looks like a million.

I knew 928 owners were fanatics, but I am now really impressed. I take the 928 to the "brushless" car wash and have had no problems. First of all it is a 1980, so I am really not that concerned with the paint. I am half hoping they will destroy it and I can repaint it green :-).

When my car was a bit lower, one of those carwashes completely ripped apart my stock belly pan.
It's rare that one of them can even get the 928 on the tracks.
Most of the times at those places, they already know that the car will not fit,
and they usually have an area for doing it by hand, so they just quickly wash
it by hand, and then send it through the rest of their procedures...

The 928s4, 535is, and Bavaria - No, never a machine wash of any kind. All are (or were in the case of the Bavaria - now SOLD - awaiting pickup by new owner) hand washed and dried...the s4's red paint looks superb after a wash (P21S liquid wash, oh and P21S wheel cleaner...awesome product) and hand drying with a synthetic chamois (The Absorber). The 535is' white paint also seems to clean up nicely...I love WHITE BMWs
The Volvo 855T on the other hand receives a combination of high-quality drive through washes and occassional hand washes. I always wax it by hand...takes forever.
I also enjoy a high-speed "dry(ing) run" that is simply exhilarating. Clean cars always drive better when freshly washed and waxed...IMHO

There is one car wash in town that has tracks of the appropriate height and width that my 928 fits through without a problem. It's the type where you get out and watch the car go through. Plus, the guys really do a great job cleaning the interior and hand drying the car, using fresh towels every time.
My car has been repainted at least once (not the best job ), and being black it has its share of swirls. It doesn't look any worse now than before I started taking it to the car wash.
