The decel valve is now on the sidelines (or in the penalty box depending on your sport of choice). The car seems to work well without it, and it is much lighter :-).
No sign of the surging behavior. The tach still bounced to zero between shifts during the warm up period, but then stopped and ran fine once it was warm. Hmmm.
The idle is still high, but I think the seal under the AFM is letting in some air. I have a new one on order and will report back when it is installed. If that doesn't improve things, the next steps arel to is check the O2 sensor, the timing, and adust the idle and mixture.

Good question. The car seem to run ok, but I will certainly be checking that. I just ordered a little AF meter, I still don't own a tach/timing instrument, but it is on the list for the near term - any you would recommend?
Once I am sure the vacuum leaks etc are gone, I was going to check the O2 sensor then the timing, reset the idle and AF mixture.

Mark,
I already owned a Sun timing light. Pretty standard.
Yesterday I purchased an Actron Voltmeter/tachometer from Sears for about $60. (You can never have too many digital voltmeters).
This unit actually has standard voltmeter options but also included tach capability. You simply connect it to the negative side of the coil and chassis ground. Works great!
If I did not own a timing light, I would purchase a timing light/tach combination unit. OTC and Equus make a few that are about $100 that appear to have nice functions.
Go get 'em!
