Beautiful car acquisition and a great road trip/adventure! It's story like these that make me wish I was living on the mainland! These road trips look way too fun to not do it. Congrats!

The option sticker that started all of this nonsense..

On 9/28 of all days, I found this car's advertisement. I noticed the 09991 on the options list and knew immediately that it was an "Exclusive Programme" build car. Next, I posted the serial number on Rob Edwards and Simon's VIN and Option number thread. Rob replied quickly:

With only 54,508 miles and Exclusive Programme & Exhibition Car options in it's pedigree plus excellent maintenance records from new, I wasted no time in contacting the dealership which seemed unusually motivated to move this car out of it's inventory. We did a couple of long face-time inspections of the car and its records. The car was obviously one of those cream-puff's that had always been garaged and babied. It had been traded in by the deceased owners daughter on a Roelofsen style horse transporter of all things.

Oddly enough, I knew the car from Florida and had attempted to purchase it almost 15 years ago and was told that the car would "Never be for sale" and to go away!

After the marathon drive to Arizona to pick it up we finally found the reason the car was not a favorite of the selling dealership. It would not hold a charge despite having a new (albeit re-manufactured) battery from the Interstate dealership across the street.

To cut to the chase, when the dealership replaced the battery with the cheap re-man unit, they had gotten a battery with a bad cell. I replaced that battery with a proper and premium quality unit and the car performs perfectly and is only drawing 0.15 milliamps when at rest. That is enough to run the clock and LH unit.

It's about as good as you can get in a GTS!

Now to name her...

So what, exactly, is an "Exhibition Car"?

I know the question was asked once or twice already, but I never saw an answer.

Google isn't giving me anything useful.

+1.

Beautiful car Dave.
Congrats.
One of only two '94 GTS made for the Canadian market...
Do you know when your car went to the US?

BTW, cool mom!
How did she find the ride?

Wisconsin Joe and Bertrand,

I 740 "Exhibition Car" is something I am continuing to research. I have a couple of speculative answers, but nothing definitive that I would post as an "exact" answer.

Porsche is a company that documents so much, but has not documented their "Show Cars" for me. For instance, it is widely stated that my XX8 optioned 91 GT wide body was used by Porsche at the New York auto show. Yet for all my efforts, I have no proof of that. I am confident that through persistent efforts and a growing contact list, I will find the proper resources to answer your question with appropriate photos and printed materials from the factory.

Bertrand,

Regarding your question about when the car came to the U.S... 1994 GTS #102 arrived in the U.S. on 4/10/2001 when it had 18,019 miles on it.

Mom loves driving in the country searching out beauty and curvy roads. We had a blast looking at the fall colors and chasing the sun to try to capture the brilliance of the foliage... She's 89 - going on 16.

Interesting car.

Exhibition car may be a car on display during a show or for some press tests.
This a very early 1994 MY Canadian market car, so certainly produced in August/September 1993, and delivered a few weeks after.

You may find pictures of the car into period canadian magazines, maybe.

Hi Samuel,

I agree that the car was likely used "on display or for some press tests" but do not have that silver bullet of evidence. It will be fun to find it and to get more from Porsche (and yes, I've got Fred on it as well). No news on the other cars we are looking for either...

You are also correct about the date of manufacture and here is a photo of the door jamb information which shows 9/93.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

You should try to contact Marc Ouayoun, current CEO of Porsche Canada. He is a very nice guy and a car nut (not just Porsche, by the way).
https://twitter.com/marcouayoun?lang=fr

I'm sure that if he can help you, he will. When he was CEO of Porsche France, he added a Cobalt Blue manual 928 GTS to the fleet of the company. I know that he was looking for one for himself but don't know if he has fount it since.

Have a nice day,
Samuel
PS: Fingers crossed for the others cars

Samuel,

Thanks for the ideas regarding contacting CEO of Porsche Canada Marc Ouayoun and car period magazines.
