Good possibility the Valet pushed down on the shift lever as you do on many cars to engage reverse......and that popped off the already worn out socket.

Then I put the large tie wrap on it to keep the ball from jumping out of the cup down the road.

Many thanks! Got her back on the road.
I persevered (rediculously) for 6 hrs trying with a large ratchet strap to pull the cup and new bushing onto the ball. Had to shave the new bushing inner lip a tad, which then took 6 minutes to get on. Then backed it up with a 6"clamp/strap as others have mentioned.
