Default Intake refresh questions

(1) I am in the middle of an intake refresh. In addition I also want to replace the 30 year old heater hoses.
Every search ends up as a heater valve discussion but none about those 2 long hoses against the wall.
Problem: I cannot get to the clamps because the wiper motor is in the way. I've never had to touch the
wiper motor so do I have to remove it first or is there another way?
If I have to would it be a few bolts and reversal or will I have to fiddle with aligning it afterwards? This is my concern.

(2) How do folks get their FP reg and dampers (brass/bronz) looking all shiny? Is there a 'treatment' like you do with jewelry or is it a
spray paint treatment?

Please and thanks

1: Nope you do not need to touch anything else. I find it easiest to cut the old hoses so I can grab them with a pair of pliers close to the inlets and if the hose clamps are rotated in such a way that you can't loosen them just cut the top one with a dremel so you can remove and gain access to the lower clamp.

2: I have painted them with high VHT gold paint, but it won't last forever. You can replace but they are not cheap.

I just did this and was able to use a long screwdriver and pass behind hood into cowl area and unscrew clamps. If not at the right angle try using small ignition wrench. Upload a pic so we can see what you are dealing with.

Thank you Adam and Tracy.
The head of the clamp is facing the wiper motor so I will cut and remove.
Ok, so gold paint it is.

May sound crazy, but that hood is super easy to remove. I remove mine every time I work under the cowling, makes life a lot easier.

I’ve wanted to remove hood in past, but put up with skinned knuckles because I’m paranoid it will get damaged by me/other family members while off car!

Any tips for protecting it? Maybe just slide under car out of harm’s way?

when I had sunroof off for refurb, I kept it in bubble wrap under the bed!

Guess you could slide it under the car, I always lean it on the wall with support on the underside.
First time I removed the hood the mounting bolts went missing, had to order new bolts as I had none. Needless to say, I have not had that issue again.

Put down some towels and flip it upside down and lay it on the roof of the car, makes great storage spot for light parts too.

As for the heater hoses, I've replaced them, had to remove the wiper motor assembly to gain access to the clamps.

However... has anyone actually had one of the long hoses fail? I've never seen it and the ones I've removed always looked to be in great shape.

Mine never failed, I replaced mine when replacing the heater valve. I wish I would have done it when replacing all the A/C lines. Would have made for a little more room.

The hoses are 30 years old and the replacements only cost $45 so I figured why not.

Probably the best argument for replacement there is.

Failure wouldn't have the catastrophic consequences that fuel line failure does, but it'd be a mess, a PIA and would disable the car (which means that it would happen at the worst possible time in the worst possible place).

Wiper motor isn't all that big of a deal. Unbolts & removes, Bolts back in. The only real 'alignment' issues are if you turn the motor itself and want to make sure the wipers park in the correct location.

There's a lot of info in the 'wiper motor overhaul' which covers replacing the bearing in the wiper motor. Obviously, the wiper motor has to come out to do that. Thread here:

Thanks Joe. With new hoses in my hands I followed Adam's advise and cut the old ones off.
In 30 years time it will be easier for my son to replace, lol.

However, I think in Phase 2 I will rehab the motor as a winter project.

What size of triple square bolt is needed to remove the cover to get to the pins?
I saw a shop selling them individually so need to buy the entire set.
(RL picture, ignore the green circles)

Should be an M8. Grab a set of these off amazon and you should be good for all but the lower one by the brake booster. I cut a snap-on down short to fit there. These are a set I bought because they were cheap but have not used them much. Figure if I lose my good tools they will work.
